Voltage regulator problem on LGB Mallet main board

I have an LGB Mallet - it's the DCC ready 22852 version with sound board, although I'm running analogue. One of the voltage regulators under the main board (not the sound board) has broken away from under the circuit board. It's impossible to solder it back as the 3 lugs have broken from the regulator at the point where it goes into the regulator. I had another regulator on an old Bachmann Big Hauler sound board which looked the same so I removed it and soldered it into the LGB board. Everything worked fine but after a couple of minutes the regulator became very hot. I know regulators do generate heat but I'm concerned the regulator I've fitted may not be rated appropriately and I ought to acquire one that is right for the LGB board. The Bachmann regulator has no visible marking to ID it - as for the broken LGB regulator, the only markings I can see say '9618 Morocco BDX53C'. Presumably this means something to someone but not me!

Does anyone know what regulator is suited to the LGB board - would any 5v regulator do or should I be looking for something specific? Thanks.

Thanks Philip for putting me straight on that and alerting me to the fact that just because two things look the same, they may not be!

After a further rummage in my 'don't ever throw this away box' I've found 2 unused things in a sealed bag that look the same as the failed one - probably bought from Maplins/Tandy years ago. These are marked BDX53C and also say SM 8424. I assume the latter is just the manufacturer's call sign and part number and that otherwise one of these would be a suitable replacement.
