Video - How I made a swing bridge from uPVC trim

Following-on from my PhotoStory about creating my railway, I've now posted a short video showing how I constructed the swing bridge from uPVC trim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82xsv3obxwo

As before, I used PhotoStory3 (a freebie from Microsoft) to create a slide show, edited the transitions and added some music. An evening's work while half watching the telly - only breaking off to see Ann Widdecombe's latest antics.

I can't remember who I need to thank for the idea of using uPVC trim - it was on the GSM forum.

B*****y marvelous. Lovely job :bigsmile::bigsmile:

Outstanding, just brilliant. The technical video is extremely helpful, so no more LGB bridges for me! The former LSWR swing bridge across Hooe Lake on the Turnchapel branch at Plymstock is of a similar design, but much shorter and less elegant, well, in my opinion, anyway. However, it would make an interesting model. I've been inspired......

Kind regards

Want one. . . . . . or two. . . . .. or three . . . . . . .or. . . . . .

A superb bridge Rik. The video was excellent and your blog is also an amazing source of info and inspiration. Very many thanks for sharing all that.

Nice one Rik. Will any make of superglue do for the pvc? The best thats available here seems to be the Loctite controllable one - I need to build a 10ft lift out bridge (or similar - maybe pivoted at one end) - so had been wondering about something that would save weight. Again, a great inspiration.

I used Eurocell's own brand of superglue. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than those little 2g tubes. There seems to be a Eurocell store in Dublin but couldn't see any others listed for the Emerald Isle. Not sure if Eurocell does mail order but if not let me know and I'll get you a bottle and send it off to you.

The chap who did the original posting on GSM (anyone remember who - or is he here on GSC?) didn't use any other structural components (ie no plank) and his bridges were lightweight and very robust - and a lot more faithful to the original than my cheat.

I must admist I was amazed at how strong the bonds were with superglue. But that's what they use to fix the trim on buildings so it must be reilable.

Thanks for the feedback Martin.
At least I don't have to contend with snakes, turtles and hurricanes - just a picturesque coating of frost and snow at present - so indoor jobs for me at present.......

Twas me. Woderwick's cheepo bridges. Well done, I glad to see some one else comment on the strength of the glue, it takes some believing.
Its on the site, link below. Or if you prefer. http://www.smegworld.org.uk/spaf/gb/gb.htm

Excellent video - a great improvement on the plank,

I noticed my DIY/builders' merchant had small tubs of superglue, when I went in yesterday. Reading the instructions it doesn't look good stuff to use indoors, and with all the usual caveats about skin and eye contact. Did you aspply it with a small disposable brush?

a very nice bridge, me likes:thumbup:

Thank you very much for showing that. I have 2 gaps currently spanned by lift out sections of decking, this has given me the jolt I needed to do something better

Thanks Rik - both for the advice and offer - I have the Loctite glue and a few tubes of the "el cheapo" type as well. I have some PVC angle and will try out. Just can't wait for the ice to go so I can sort out my drive then get on with something more interesting!

Wod - Dodo that I am, I even asked the question about CA glue. I file things away in my mind for future retrieval - the file side works its just the retrieval bit that needs polishing up!

Mick

Yep - it works!

Great Vid Rik and very instructive - first class

Thats a great model.
For larger supplies of super glue try model airplane shops.

Excellent in all respects - thank you for sharing your inventiveness, Rik. I had used that trim with nuts and bolts to enhance a rather naff and battered pressed metal bridge, but that just goes to show what can be done when you have a mind a lot more agile than mine!
