U class - tank top coal box

The 99 78xx numbering was from the time period over the second world war- 1938 till 1946 from memory. Not many OBB loks had coal bunkers- 298.56, 298.106, some of the SKGLB loks and Murtalbahn but that is all to my limited knowledge. The bunkers on the side tanks seemed to be fairly random and as the time suited. most seemed to have the slopey ones pictured in this picture. I think LBG produced both varieties.

What the LGB Cat and all the Pictures show is that to understand the Prototype, RESEARCH is vital. THe Internet if you can be bothered to ask it is a Rich Source of Info. Not always exact, but you can rely on the Pictures though not always the Legend on them.

Sorry, I just happened to see several examples of the LGB model refereed to in one of my old LGB catalogues that seem to answer the OP's question about where the loose coalbox, found with the LGB model, might be located. Hence the scanned images. No deeper meaning was intended.

Sorry that I couldn't be "bothered" to refer to the "Internet" for more prototypical research.

I try to do better next time :'(

I dont think that was a criticism of your post Frank. Just that there are loads of variables we can look up if we feel the need.

Sorry but the position of the coal bunker is relatively minor compared to the cab height which was ok on earlier models but too high on later ones. The proportions of the earlier ones look so much better.
 
Maybe but the cab is not loose in the box! Anyway, part of the fun is a bit of historical research and discussing that here on the forum.
 
it just makes the variations a bit more interesting-that and colors, bunker, cab height, and...whatever that cylinder with conical ends which sits below the and to the side of the stack -a steam generator? one of mine has it, and another doesn't-and I don't believe its missing, simply not included with the first black U43 version I have. My grey one, has it.

-they did 'variant thing' as well on the Sach IVk, some with and some without toolbox

I still get hung up on those U's with and without dummy third front light. (I like lights,
just haven't quite figured out how to light something so shallow and do it elegantly and make it identical to the side tank lights in intensity-thinking of a very shallow LED chip and some sort of lens)

id suggest using a light rubber-like adhesive that wont leave un-removable residue, nor interfere with the tank top where its glued.
 
On a very close inspection there are tiny residues of glue on the tank top. Looks like insufficient glue was used at the factory.
In any event, following research here and on the 'net its been glued back on - so thats it.
