Hello.

Does anybody know a company that makes them.....
Or will i have to make it by myself...?
It needs to be quite robust and capable to stand up to turning a LGB Mikado or even bigger locos.
It also needs to stand up to harsh english winter climates like wind rain and freezing....

Phil...

A good source for gear motors is Surplus Traders. They are in Vermont, USA, but the selection is so good it might be worth trying them: http://www.surplustraders.net/a/018...things you never knew you needed! Andrew

if you look for a slow motor, you might consider those, the modern rear mirrors for cars have inside.
they are small and forgiving, when not switched off while the moved thing can't progress any more.

You could experiment with an old electric screwdriver which includes gearing. You just need to add a dc supply to make it work.

Now that's a good suggestion! On mine the batteries are always dying because they stand too long between charges, but with a D.C. supply they would work

A turntable at the terminus would be good.

Now where am I going to fit the other three????

Meccano, now made in France Hattons sell Meccano gears etc also try Proops also old record turntables. (plus what speed you would like 78/45/33,1/3 rpm  ) Alyn

[align=center]I have used an air louvre damper motor from an ol air conditioning plant, they are industrial 12/24 volt and have very good gearboxes with lots of torque and they are almost silent, the make that springs to mind are Belimo,

these are also used to control water valves in boiler rooms, If I looked around enough I may be able to find one,

[align=center]These are what I was thinking,

they normally just drive a crank but the geareboxes can be modified so they just revolve, the torq is great

Seeing Wod's reply made me think. I built a friction drive using the Como geared motor (100: 1) using a rubber tyre and other meccano bits -

This is for my funicular when I eventually finish it. The 5" wheel is the winding drum and just spins on the spindle.

I have made a few in the past and IMHO there is no substitute for a mechanism that drives from the end of the table. Yes centre driven mechs work, but nothing like the smooth motion applied from the end of the deck.
