Just a few pictures of the Bachmann trams, I rebuilt with Buhler motors and live trolley pole collection. The steam tram is scratch built, on a Stainz chassis, sound and smoke unit fitted. Also some LGB trams. Alyn

Hi Alyn

They look great. Thanks for showing your fleet. I have some unmodified Bachmann trams on my layout. I don't have overhead wires though as they are not compatible with others users of the garden such as small children

Ian

A really great tram fleet Alyn - you must tell how you converted the motors. I like the steam tram engine and trailers. I have always been fascinated by steam trams. I have modelled a Leeds "Kitson" engine but, after four years, still haven't got round to making the roof-mounted condenser pipes. I'll try uploading a piccy or two.

I don't seem to have got the picture size right somehow. I'll try to make it smaller still because I'm having trouble viewing it!

Here's another view (hope I've got it right this time). The trailer is a twc-axle Starbuck car that was converted into a bogie car (1884) and then later on in to a single-deck car.

I also have the Bachmann United Traction enclosed and the open cross-bench cars - the latter I made into a trailer for the closed car and used the truck for a Anglicised version of a Birney car. Its literally a box on wheels and the detailing is printed from my PC using Microsoft Word and its Word Art and Drawing facilities. Its an unfinished project as yet (needs proper trolley poles, life guards and trays, trolley retrievers, steps, fenders and lights).

Forgot the pic!

Nice build Mick. I have a book on steam tram builders. The picture below is of Jackson Sharp demonstrator #100 the prototype of the Bachmann enclosed car.

Hi Alyn, thanks for your kind comments. I originally intended to build a garden tramway but somehow got sidetracked (pun intended) into Bachmann Big Hauler locos and the like. Being a Leeds lad, the Bachmann tram reminded me of the Roundhay Electric Tramway cars - although they were built by Stephenson - I didn't know Jackson Sharp built streetcars. What year would that prototype be?

Hullo Mick, I didn't realise that you are an ex-pat Leeds lad like myself?

I have a book from Turntable Publications, 745 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield S7 2BG, Leeds City Tramways - A Pictorial Souvenir, by Robert F Mack. ISBN 0 902844 10 5.

I knew Bob Mack when I was a young lad in Leeds, and we were both members of the Leeds Transport Touring Group. I don't know if the book is still available. I brought my copy here in Suffolk at a 2nd Hand Book Shop, in memory of Bob....

Nice work. Wonder why more do not model trams? Interesting prototypes, operations and can work with tight radius curves!

I used to do live steam traction engines many moons ago, but health and safety took hold, so I went for trams/trolleys;- prototype power, plus small radius curves. All models run with live overhead. Alyn

Steam Trams - Great Stuff. Just loive the LGB Open Coach Conversions, I think that a couple of LGB Play Coaches better keep clear of the razer saw.

I have started on some more rebuilds and conversions. Over the next few weeks I will be adding to the thread along with some pictures. Also some extra houses are being built so a busy time ahead. Alyn

One of the conversions is to the LGB New Orleans streetcar, the fitting of cut down ex-Bachmann trolley poles (with modified trolley heads to track the LGB profile catenary wire) and wired for overhead pick-up. More pictures will follow over the next few days. :clap:Alyn

Sorry if I appeared to corrupt the system, not sure how. Must be my Static personality. Here is my small cobntribution for us lovers of Trams, particularly Steam trams. I bought this beastie from Evil bay some time ago, will not be nasty about it as it was sold by a nice man in Portsmouth clearing his deceased fathers G scale collection.

This had been repainted, adapted and had an LGB (the Electric one not the Steam one) Tram Chassis in it. This I promptly stole for a red tram that I wanted to motorise. leaving me with a body. I stripped off the Brown Paint with "Modelstrip". Removed pretty well everything below the chassis. I then repainted it and stuffed a Stainz chassis in. The Stainz had pretty well everything removed from it that was not required to make it go. I then somehow managed with many oaths, copious cutting, much shutting and stuffing managed to shoehorn the chassis, LGB Sound Unit plus finally a Massoth Power Store thing in. This was the result:-

The Massoth Power Store thingy has not proved to be much good at getting it over dead frogs. But my line is mostly Peco which have been converted to live frogs so it is pretty well Ok here.

Finally as a further source of inspiration I include the following. One day I may scratch build this beastie:-

It is a sort of inspiration as I wanted a Steam Tram Loco that you could see the wheels and valve gear a bit. The web site mentioned on the above picture is well worth a look as there are some really nice G scale models of the line here:-
