Track Laying on the H&MGR

Sharp bedding sand (GAP5mm) laid using 15mm thick timber strips as a depth guide and screed with a concreting float.

Timber removed, & the gap filled. Sand lightly walked on to bed it in & now we’re ready for the good bit!

Track laid and tapped down into the sand using a length of timber and Mr Rubber Hammer, checking and adjusting any humps or hollows.

More sand laid over track and brushed in with scrubbing brush.

Track well watered with fine spray on hose or watering can.

Finally check for any stray “stones” stuck in the chairs or joints, give the track a quick clean and…

Hi John,
that was a good effort for Boxing Day.
I took my 1:24 r/c tank back to the hobby shop for a fix or replacement but they dont open again until next Tuesday.

Was thinking on this today and one option I have used when I ran out of GAP5 was to put some builders mix over a soil sieve as done by one of our WGRG members. Quite a good compromise provided the builders mix is from crushed aggregate and not screened pit metal or river run. I.e. sharp sand and stone not roundish stuff. Sand used in asphaltic concrete may also be an option but the grading envelope is a bit different and the stuff I trialed didn't lock in quite so well, but would be okay. I'm able to access trade sources which I appreciate may not be available to all these days.
 
I have used blue metal 1/4 minus as a ballast. It holds between the tracks but tends to wash away on the side of tracks.

Oh, and the tank has been fixed.

Oh and my son has cleaned up my computer and updated my browser and pics on this forum are no longer a worry.

I suspect 20 or 12mm topping would be fine for a subbase but you'd need to put it over a soil sieve to get the size down for ballast. I suspect if you could get the product with a top size down to about 5 to 7mm then it would probably be similar to our GAP5 (Grades all Passing 5mm screen size). Ron's blue metal 1/4 minus would be similar. And yes topping up the ballast is part of my regular planned maintenance, which doesn't take long done a couple of time a year.
