A lot easier than swinging a shovel in the cramped confines of a Fairlie too ;)

Mel if you fit sound :bigsmile: to an oil burner they have quite a distinctive low roar to the burners.
Must find GR on the way to work tomorrow.
 
I'm beginning to think you have tooo much time on your hands Mel. It all looks super, come around and have a bash at mine its been a little neglected.

That's quite a comforting sound to the fireman. :bigsmile: The occasional loud Whumph is a different matter! :nail: :rolf:
Regarding minor details have you invented an explanation for leaving the steam driven turbo generator on the loco after removing the electric lamps? Also I notice you've kept the American re railing ramps stashed under the smokebox. I think UK practice was to either hope you didn't derail or carry a jack. At the risk of offending some members I'll mention that the latter seems more prevalent in Ireland and The Isle of Man! :rolf:
 
I've come up with the reason for Mel - the loco has electric lighting in the cab? :nerd: Hmm that does raise the question where our loco's have a light in the cab but no generator, what sort of light (if any) was/would have been used?:nerd:

None at all!

Last year I travelled on the NYMR, behind a SR loco with an open backed cab, and you could see the glow from the cab fire quite clearly when I looked out of the lowered window.

Besides, like your car, I understand it is not allowed to have your interior light on whilst driving any loco, be it steam, diesel, electric or whatever....
 
A couple of weeks ago we decided to clear out the storage cupboard for the West Mids GSS layout and found a few buildings that are unlikely to find a home on the layout now that it's nearing completion. I've had my eye on one of these buildings for a while as I thought it just had the right "look". It was scratch built by one of the members who is a very talented model maker (he should be, he was a professional until he retired) in resin from his own moulds. He very kindly agreed that I could buy the building for a donation to club funds as it was starting to get a bit knocked about.

It was built as a station building for an island platform and is therefore quite thin. It originally had a single pitch to the roof (more like a low relief building), but I wanted to revert it to a more conventional layout. So today I took out the hacksaw and set to giving it a standard pitched roof. I also had to repair some of the damage, including making a new door for the one end (all out of plasticard).

Although I really like the building, I haven't made my mind up where it will live. If I end up using it as a railway building, I'll change the plain front bargeboard to a saw tooth version. But I'm starting to think that it might make a very good guard room for RAF Ffynon Garew???????

It'll need a long mirror, so that the 'erks can check if their hair is short and their berets are on straight....
 
Managed to paint the building today so you can see (hopefully) how the new bits and repairs tie in. It definitely won't be living here, but if I don't use it as a guard room, I reckon it'll also look the dogs things as a railway building with a few enamel signs etc.

I also managed to obtain this. I think it's Piko (or maybe Pola?). Again, I'm not entirely sure where it will end up, but I just like the simplicity of it. What I've got in mind is some sort of machinery just visible through those big windows - maybe a pump house, or part of the brewery with some nice copper vats????????????????
