Mel for my 10ps worth i cant fault the revo when fitted in a steam loco like my Batt / track powered Mikado it is faultless i have 6 aux functions smoke, whistle, bell, chuff (while stationary) and lights..... it is able to run a loco so slowly that you can hardly see it move... the chips are £90 but you can get a pack of 6 from the states for £300 and that includes all wiring to put them in any loco.......... Like you im working on using all Battery power using a few wagons with revo chips and batteries with a quality sound card it means having a multi plug between the wagon and loco but saving on converting all my locos
I have 3 Revo handsets and a spare chip if you want to experiment..... if you cant get on with it send it all back...... if you do like it you can have the handset cheap just return the chip when you buy a new one (once wired in they just unplug as you get the sockets with the chip) either that or give me a week or so to build a working wagon with motor power wires to go to a loco and you can borrow that with a handset........
I have uploaded a couple of youtube videos of my mikado and one of the 3 class 66s that were also fitted with revos you can look at but none really demonstrate the control you get with it....Tomorrow i will do another to show you how slow it will run in the mean time have a look at these

Many thanks for the very kind offer Tony, much appreciated, but I'll stick with the Cliff Barker stuff. I've been testing it for more than a year now and I'm happy that it suits my railway best.

I think that battery propulsion with digital control is probably the way forward, but I'm not sure that Revolution is the answer as things stand, certainly not for me.

Yes I can see that 'normal' RC is the best solution for you.
The Revolution chip does need the capacitor board add on to be fine using tack power on dirty track, or even partially dirty or even for any drop out....a bit like DCC can be ......

My reason for suggesting it is partially due to the fact that I got the brand new handset plus three chips for a couple of notes so it sort of makes sense for what I want to do. Also I saw Tony's locos runnig with battery and they were superb.
I will not use the Revos for track power as I have TE ordinaire at present and will.....drift to the dark side for part of the layout. But DCC needs good track too so I wonder what will show?

I tried one of the 66s switched on full track power and performed better than it would with controled track power but not having to clean the track has conviced me to stay with batteries i was worried about the length of time they would last but to be honest ive got bored waiting for a loco to run out of power... my Mikado must have 3 hours on one charge so far and it still keeps going

i can only tell you what ive seen with the locos ive had ..... the 66s were plug and play and the revo chip controled smoke, 2 different light modes and either dallee. or my loco sound with no extra boards....... the out put is not powerfull enough if running lights or smoke in a loco you are having to hard wire eg not plug and play so you do need a smoke board which is £15 that will control lights and smoke from one board or 2 high power outputs the new 2011 chips come with sound already instaled but are £450 for 6 chips

Ok its not dirt cheap and not as versitile as DCC but you dont need to spend £1200 on a control unit and if you want to run battery you cant with DCC (not yet anyway)
Both systems have there pros and cons and we each will prefer either depending on our set ups.... for me the cost of equiping a non plug and play loco with a chip, a smoke board, and a reasonable sound card is about £150 that will produce a loco that does and sounds like my Mikado does ...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-RP-KrWCuU .. thats good enough for me
The revo controler i think is better and easyer to use than any of the DCC ones... it costs £240 with a chip and can control 50 locos

No problem Mel...I still think that Richie's photo shows why bike riding should see an increase in your neck of the woods...anyway there would always be a place to park them!

A couple of things have happened in the last six days that I have been without an internet connection.

The "seating area" project is still making fairly slow, but steady progress. A check of the house deeds has proved that the Russian Vine that has destroyed the back fence is NOT on my land and the council has therefore agreed to pay for getting rid of it. This Monday we spent another two hours chopping it down and filled 5 bags with cuttings. When I say 5 bags, they're the girt big uns like you get sand etc, delivered in (the ones they unload with a Hi-Ab). We reckon we'll do at least another 5 bags next Monday.

Last Saturday a parcel arrived from Cliff Barker and my Corpet has now got self-contained battery power and radio control via a Li- ion battery as recommended by Peter. Extensive testing is planned at the West Mids GSS this Saturday. I also have the kit to convert the Bachmann Baldwin after Santa's been, except for the battely which is on it's way from China.

Hey good news on the corpet. I look forward to seeing that running. Russian Vine - that stuff is from the pit so to speak. I hope you do not have organic credentials as you might need to poison the swine! It might be worth leaving enough foliage through which to get a systemic weedkiller into it- much more effective than trying to treat the stump.

I just hope there's room Doug having read the chipping thread? I can't have a look now as it's been sent off to Santa. If not, it will have to run with a battery wagon and I'll do a self contained job on one of my other locos - maybe even the standard gauge pannier tank?
