but I dont think it was a common practice back then & of course the smaller ones mounted on poles had no such provision( not that I saw anyway)
smallest I saw were cylindrical ones probably about 12 ins diam & about 2 ft high
The biggest was a lorry load by itself
The biggest one I had to move was in a factory yard backing onto Paignton goods yard just south of the station, the firm had to hire a steam crane from western region to lift it out over the fence & on to my wagon in the rail yard
Thing I remember about the oil ,was that we used it to fuel the fire that smelted the lead out of the armoured underground cable, bought by tender from SWEB from Camborne to Weston Super Mare, thus releasing the huge copper cores
we also used the medium tranny cases cut down as skips for the crane to load the lorries with, they would be about 4ft x5ft x2ft 6 high open on one end to facilitate tipping out
would not be allowed to do that today
EDIT;- wow, having looked at the link Neil gave above on PCBs I am glad I was not involved in that to long or too often, only when things were quiet on the driving side!!
The "new" standard gauge pannier tank seems to run really well, but as my standard gauge track only runs to 8' in length, running it is a bit boring. As a result she tends to just sit on the transhipment siding while the narrow gauge trains trundle past. I thought it would be nice if the pannier did something and if she was going to just sit there, she could at least "smoulder".
When we met up at an open day yesterday, Bram kindly gave me an LGB smoke generator which he had removed from one of his loco's. Today I fitted it - which involved drilling a dirty big hole straight down the chimney (scary!!). The gene is worked by a pack of re-chargeable AA batteries which will fit under the coal in the bunker (together with an on/off switch) when I make-up a pack that will fit.

Warning!!! If you have any Thomas fans in your household, don't let them read this!!!!
For some time now, the Wetton Valley Farmer's Co-Op have been asking the WGLR to provide some storage and office space in the goods yard at Gooey livestock market. There has been much wrangling and gnashing of teeth, but nothing suitable could be found. Then, the other day, the CMO of the WGLR was talking to Sir Topham Hat regarding the recent co-operation with the Sodor Railways. Sir T H announced that he had finally decided to scrap Clarabel (!!!!!!!). So a deal was done and Thomas's former partner was soon winging her way to Gooey yard.
She has had her face ripped off (!!!!!!!!) and has been re-sprayed green with a black roof (toned down with the airbrush).
Many of her windows have been blanked off (coffee stirrers) for the storage facilities. The offices have retained their windows. Her ageing body was getting a bit saggy (know the feeling), so she is supported on some old sleepers from the track used around the engine shed.
The only question remaining is what is going to happen to Clarabel's chassis? I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to tell you that, but suffice to say that it has been passed on to BR.

Haha the inverse of No.41 in the Railway Series 'Thomas and Victoria'... That last photo looks great Mel - love the moss around the yard trackwork.

Hi Mel, i haven't caught up much here in the last weeks. Just really enjoying your pannier on the standard and the claribel coach bash.
I wish I knew u were after one as we have three as one of the boys dropped and broke the face end of one which is now in the parts bin and has been replaced, u could have had it for nothing at the open day if i had known. I am now wondering if I could do a similar job to u as for my first building! Put it some where in the yard at the bottom of the garden.
PS can i just say i love the way it is sitting on sleepers. it is the kind of detail which you don't notice but makes it so real. if you know what i mean?

Gareth and Giz got it right - the chassis will be re-gauged to 64mm and will become a CCT type parcels/newspapers van to serve the early morning post train (the one that Nigel and his dog went for a ride on recently).
No bulk milk transportation on the WGLR John, far too new fangled. The WGLR is strictly churns only - so one of these would be nice in the future.
