Tiny Motor/gearbox question?

Hi folks, I bought this 12V motor/reduction gearbox (60 turns per min) combo on Amazon for £6.90. Hadn't realised it would be so tiny! (probably should have guessed from the price). My questions are: 1) would it be any use to power the classic Lehmann Rigi 900 cable car and 2) what battery would I use to power it?? Happy New Year one and all Motor_gearbox.JPG:)

Hm it might it might not, you could see how it goes with a 9v normal battery. It would just be turning a rigi wheel with cable so may work ok.

12 V motor so I'd try a PP3 9 Volt battery for testing....
 
These little N20 motor/gearboxes are adequate for a light load..

It should be fine for the cable car.

There are a number of people who use them in their scratch-built loco's, and they are fine it a light model, with (say) three skips, or one or two small coaches.

It looks very much like the motor gearbox used by Loco Remote in his 3D printed industrials, his are powered by 3.7 li-ion battery, so you might want to try a smaller voltage first.

Though they are available in a range of motor-voltages.

Hi Folks, this is my Lehmann Rigi 900 cable-car mod using tiny motor/gearbox . . mentioned earlier. It's clearly a Baileys-fueled Christmas bodge (couple of lolly sticks glued in there!), but seems to work ok. The power comes from a PP9. The gearbox is linked to the manual crank (as supplied) by a short piece of stiff plastic tubing. Only problem no reverse as yet.Cable_car_2.jpgCable_car_1.jpg

I've used dozens of those teeny tiny gear motors,,both for projects in my garden railway and in my Lionel "O" gauge layout. They are available in a myriad of gear ratios, which makes them ideal for most any project. They are surprisingly powerful.

Unfortunately, my electronics & jargon knowhow doesn't extend to wiring it up for the purpose of operating an 'up & back' cable car mechanism. It came with no instructions. The board would be operating the tiny motor/gearbox shown earlier. Can anyone help, please??

Yes, most of these modules come without instructions but there are sometimes wiring diagrams on the listing which help shed some light.

You are going to need two circuits - one to trigger the relay board and the other to power the motor.

You'll need a 12v supply for this then two micro-switches, one at the top of the cable car run and the other at the bottom. Position the switches so the cable car will press them when it reaches the ends of its run. As you can see, the positive from the power supply is connected to one side of the micro switches and the output from the switches then goes to the module input connectors X01 and X02. Make sure the jumper (the white dot in the diagram) is from the middle pin to the H pin.

The Motor Circuit

The supply for this side of the circuitry needs to be whatever works best for your motor. If it's 12v then you could use the same supply you are using for the triggering circuitry.

Hopefully, the above diagram is self explanatory, but if not, let us know and we'll guide you through it.

Actually, looking at their diagram for reversing the motor, I think they've got it wrong. Without trying it out, I can't be sure, but I reckon this is how the motor circuit should be wired.

Hi Folks, I'm struggling with this relay module and how to connect two microswitches to reverse motor direction on an 'up & back' cable car scratch build???? Specifically, where do the microswitches and the motor connect bearing in mind that this module seems to have 3 modes of operation? Apologies for minimal electronics knowhow at this end!DSC_0062.JPG
 
Difficult (probably) with what you have..
But a link to the relay module, will allow us to see what it can do..

You really need something that latches in each direction, and possibly a timer-circuit.
