The ubiquitous Stainz

Thought I had better put my latest aquisition on this thread ( it had been hidden on the Ebay section). It is an early No4 version with the cab motor and arrived covered in grime with totally black wheels from an Ebay auction. It was a non-runner but a thorough clean and it went first time. Im really pleased with it, and a worthy partner for No1.

Good pics folks - I do like that bottle train Paul.

Hi All, I don't own one yet but will pick one up when a nice condition one presents itself. We have very good friends in Mondsee and was there this summer. We went on a steam rack railway but did not realise there was a railway in Mondsee itself. I will ask my friends of course, but do you know if this line in mondsee is still running?! Will be there next summer too I suspect.

Until one finds out how it got its name. :o

OK - I'll ask! :callme:

I have heard that one before - just put two and 2 together. Didn't realise its this train. :)

I wonder if one were to cary a glass of Mt. Dew on board if they would be asked to leave?

Not a great deal of people realise that the W&L used their Stainz to haul the passenger service when the steam locos were unavailable.

Yes, of course its not serious, but the Stainz does look good in the livery.
The green No4 won recently on Ebay and pictured earlier in the thread is now getting a full repaint in a similar scheme to join it.

Mondsee has the SKGLB Railway Museum as stated above but the only track left is a few metres in front of the engine and carriage sheds to enable the vehicles to be rolled out for display. They pump the boilers full of compressed air to "drive" them out of the shed.

I was also there in the summer and they have some beautifully restored wagons, coaches and 3 U locomotives. There is also a large selection of 1:22.5 model engines.

The SKGLB used to run between Salzburg and Bad Ischl with a stop at the resort of Mondsee.

The museum, and one of the U's....

My 'Growler' Stainz No4, pictured a few lines up, has now recieved its 'touch-up'......which resulted in a full repaint to the Chocolate and Cream livery which matches some of the passenger stock quite nicely. The torrntial rain precludes a trip outside so it is photographed here on the workshop sidings.

It makes a pair in the livery as my No2 was similarly treated some time back. I think it suits them well.

One of my green Stainz No:2 has 'Letzte HU. 10.2.76' printed in white on the red section back and front.

I have been told it stands for "Letzte Hauptuntersuchung", or last major inspection, which was apparently undertaken on 10 February 1976. Such key events were usually recorded in paint on Austrian locomotives.

Does the printing, date the Model in in any way. (Model No:2020)

I am interested because this was from my brothers collection, which I inherited.
I would be interested how far back it was produced. I know he had it in the mid 80's. The price on the Box is £86.

Thanks
