Sumpter Valley Mallett?

I remember seeing those locos painted gold running on a John Preston Garden Railway DVD :bleh:

I've a feeling that this came from the estate of a member of the GSS who sadly passed away recently (some may have visited his garden railway in Towyn which was opened to the public for charity).
Much of his stock went to auction and nearly all of it was acquired by this person who has now listed it on ebay.

I seem to recall seeing an advertisement for the sale of these loco's quite recently. I've nothing against folk trying to make a few bob, but wouldn't anyone who was interested in them have bid on them at the auction? So wouldn't their current seller have payed the top price for them anyway?
Under these circumstances I don't see how he can expect to make a profit on them at all.

With that paint job i wonder what top rate is! Yuk!:bleh:

Well, that bunch of silver locos and stuff has started its 2nd go round ebay. Sorry, but for those asking prices I'd expect them to go round and round forever. Not sure I'd bite at 50% of the asking price, given a repaint would be first thing on the list. Be interesting to see if they do shift and/or if the prices drop over time.

I'm not sure how much these went for at the auction but the guide prices were fairly low. The prices he's asking are way too high though and he doesn't even say that they work, just that you might need to do a bit of fiddling!! The paint job, whilst attractive to joe public, doesn't do much for their re-sale value either.

it appears the paint was nicely done-but it looks less railroady and more aero to me-
it simply doesnt look plausible, especially for a steam loco

not sure what would prompt someone to make an LGB locomotive more garrish or conspicuous

thats a lovely loco normally -but the work it would take to try to return that on to engine black would be a great deal

Following on from Mel's comment about the origin of these items, looks like there are some photos from this line here:

Must be sad to break up a collection like this. I wonder how well used this stuff was?

well from that link
there was a man who loved his trains and his garden
-clearly a passion and great deal of effort

and, that link is to a rather cleverly done garret from two stainz'

I can now see from that the relevance of the silver livery.
What a superb railway.

Well, as I said earlier, this railway was open to the public for much of the Summer months and at other times (raising a lot of money for charity), so they are probably pretty well run-in .

They were extremely well used as the garden was open to the public with the money all going to charity. I knew the chap who owned them and although I never made it to his railway I know how keen he was and much he enjoyed running it so it is rather sad to see his collection disbanded like this.

Hear hear to that James. We visited a few times and Alf was a really nice bloke. Not only did he put a heck of a lot of effort into the fund raising (despite his own health issues), but he also did a lot for our hobby especially with the youngsters.

Very sad.

A month later and they're all still going round and round on ebay. Way too expensive for R/C modded unrealistic repaints, just as we suspected.
