I have been a fan for a long time of the Austrian U class and its related subclasses. I have some models of these locos in various scales.
After finding a post made a while back on the LGB Club’s board I decided to do some research on the different versions in my collection made and by LGB and Lilliput (H0e scale). I have detailed the LGB ones here.
LGB made this loco in a few different versions. Initially, there were four. In my notes (LGB) appears by the version that LGB modeled if there were different owners. The basis of the frirst four versions are as follows:
2070/D was Krauss-Linz 6824, built in 1913, kkStB then StLB U43 (LGB). Done in black and grey. Prototype is in disrepair, fractured cylinder block? Grey version done on the 75th birthday of the loco by LGB for 1988. Model built 1971-1974, with 2070D 1974-1978, and again 1987-1990 (grey).
http://www.stlb.at/triebfahrzeuge/details/u43.htm
2071/D was Krauss-Linz 4506, built in 1900, Zillertalbahn #2 Black,(LGB) some with stripes in red, others not. LGB have done many versions. Prototype is in service. Model built 1971, with 2071D 1972-1989, replaced by 2171D (see below).
http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/at/privat...am/2a-zbahn.jpg
2072/D was Krauss-Linz 3711, built in 1898. NÖLB U3, BBÖ, DRB 99 7819, ÖBB 298.53 (LGB). Similar too the early 2071/D and gained LGB's taller cab roof. ÖBB 298.53 is currently in service. Model built 1971-1973, with 2072D 1973-1978, Primus version sold also.

2073/D was Krauss-Linz 3816, built in 1898. kkStB U14 , CSD U37.004, DRB 99 7843, ÖBB 298.14, then Eurovapor 298.14 (LGB) The loco left the Waldenburgerbahn in Switzerland in 1984 and went to Germany. It is currently on the Öchsle Bahn museum line. There it was under its ÖBB number of 298.14 until 1994, then put under its occupation number of 99 7843. It is privately owned and is in a state of disrepair. Model built 1973-1974 with 2073D 1973-1987.

MODEL NOTE: 2071D (now 2171D) and 2070D got the newer power block around 1988. Identification are the power skates, plastic valve gear, constant lighting w/gold light trim, smoke, and internal switch.
With this, 2073D becomes an enigma. The Kalmbach LGB guide lists it as going out of production in 1987 (ties with block change above), but the catalogs show it until 1990 as a Discontinued Item. Did this retain the older style motorblock until its end of production with the sale of remaining stock until the end?
Of the four above, from what I can tell, the basic body shell of the 2071D/2073D were continued for several versions including:
LGB 21711 was another Zillertal #2 offering, renumbering of 2171D in 1993.
21701 was Krauss-Linz 4183, built in 1899. FOD 11, CSD U 37.007, DRB 99 791 and then DR 99 4712 (LGB). Prototype broken after a 1959 wreck in the 1960s. Of interest, this was one of three U class that were not to Bosnian 30 inch gauge, but Saxon 30 inch gauge. The difference beeing 750mm in Saxony, while the Bosnian (and all of Austria) were 760mm.
Photo online? (I have some before and after the wreck in print here in books in DR paint, and it appeared in LGB's 1993/4 catalog also).
LGB 20705 "Raimond", it turns out, is Zillertalbahn Nr. 1. or Krauss-Linz 4505 of 1900, one lok ahead by production number of Zillertal Nr. 2 (Zillerthal). Other than a brief stint under Austrian military "ownership" during WWI (which I have neglected on the master list for a few other loks)has remained as ZB Raimond Nr.1 all its life.
Came as a set only: http://www.lokshop.de/images/Lgb2000/20705.JPG This is the only LGB U to come with factory sound as of 2006.
20721 was Florisdorf 1354, built in 1900. NÖLB U6, BBÖ U56, DRB 99 7822, ÖBB 298.56 (LGB). Prototype is in service. The only non-Kraus built model by LGB, but why have the left off others?
http://www.schmalspur.at/daten298.html
(NOTE: General U info provided, Kr-Li data not for Fl built lok).
23701 was Krauss-Linz 3709, built in 1898, NÖLB U1. BBÖ U51. DRB 99 7817, ÖBB 298.51, and then preserved as NÖLB U1 again in a VERY light pastel greeen (LGB has strait stack, photos of the preserved loco shows strait and turban stack in the late 1980s). Prototype in service.

2171D/22711 Zillertal #2 being a staple. Details above. Version with sound in a limited edition set.
The 2070/D shell comes back once again for:
22701 U43 coming back with the low cab and bunker in black with a shield on the front, detailed above.
An interesting item to note on the LGB models is the lack of working lights on the smokebox, even those that had such lights they were “blanked off”. Some of the versions that were modelled by LGB should not have front tank lights, as shown in the photos.
LGB also dorked with the cab roof heights. This was done, supposedly, due to the cab roofs not matching the other cars. A shame, as the prototypes do not and it makes the later loks a bit top-heavy.
What is left?
CSD (Czech)
PKP (Poland)
JDZ (Yugoslvian)
MAV (Hungarian)
DRB (German Occupation)
…And with some bashing (smokebox/tank mods we could see the SKGLB and CFR (Romanian, one of these is in the US now, shown below) versions.
http://www.steamlocomotive.com/misc/images/cfr395104.jpg
Also on LGB models as on prototype:
Turban and stovepipe stacks were both employed.
Spoked and disc drivers (like those on the “Stainz”) were used depending on date and builder on the prototypes. LGB reportedly used these on the earliest of versions.
Measurements. I finally got a chance to measure one of these and compare them to publshed KrLi drawings from Club 760. I have the prototype dimension and the model "scaled out" by taking the model and x 22.5:
Rear buffer beam (not buffer) to rear trailing wheel: 1150mm/Model 1102mm
Trailing wheel to rear driver: Prototype 1900mm/Model 1777mm
Rear driver to center driver: Prtotype 900/Model 990mm
Front driver to center driver: Prototype 1200mm/Model 1215mm
Front driver to front of smokebox: 1530mm/Model 1507mm (1400mm on some loks in prototype)
Buffer to buffer (U43), with rear bunker: 7640mm/Model 7650mm over LGB buffers/couplers.
Unfortunately, no height dimensions given.
