Hello all,

I'm currently working on upgrading my 2 LGB LCE trains. I opened my newer one which was purchased off ebay and found it has a sound system installed. This is not standard I take it? Here are a few photos of what was inside, does any one recoginse it? Also are there any instructions around for it? It does work and the volume knob works. all it does is make diesel engine noises though. there are no horns or anything. Any idea if it should have a horn?

Hi Dave
Looks like a LGB 65002 European sound unit , Jeremy sells them for £157 i think you can use reed switches and magnets with these for horn etc.

Many thanks for the quick answers, I don't know much about reed switches and magnets so there won't be any of those for a while.

Still I'm happy I bought the whole LCE for under £100 and to find all that gear stashed under the hood a nice suprise!

if any one else has one of these and knows an easy answer to get the horn please let me know. @(nothing too technical I hope.)

To get the bell & whistle you need to connect a couple of reed switches to the small 3 pin socket, the one with the picture of the bell & whistle. If you don't fancy fiddling yourself get an LGB 65012 which just plugs in. Its meant for a mogul tender so you may have to bodge it to fit.
The sound unit & capacitors are over £200 so you have a bargain.

Great buy!
I've got same type of question if anybody can help
I bought a SD45 fitted with an LGB 65003 sound unit. I get the three blast's of the horn as it moves off I run Alanogue. Wil I get more sounds buy investing in a 17050 which the big book states it triggers thee units.
any help would be great.

The 17050 will only trigger the horn / bell if you have reed switches (such as LGB65012 Mogal Sound Unit Trigger) connected to the sound unit.

You should get three horn blasts as you move off in reverse, two when starting forwards. The bell should ring for a while whilst starting and then stop as you speed up.
Using 17050 magnets in conjunction with the 65012 reed switch unit (or a home built version of the same) will trigger the same sounds as the loco passes over the 17050. Putting the 17050 one way round in the track will trigger the bell, putting it the other way round triggers the horn.
Edit, typed this reply whilst the previous contributor was doing the same.

If I buy the 65012 reed switch unit do I need to buy the 17050 magnets or would it work with just normal magnets as my other sound units do?
My Dad had made up a home built unit for a dallee and my loco sound unit's but he's not to well just now I wouldn't know where to start.
I know so many questions!

Hullo Dave, I have a similar LGB Sound Unit in one of my V52 diesels.

What I've found is that by turning up the controller slowly, you will get the engine start up and then tick over. I then keep the controller at that setting ready for the next bit.

Turning the controller up slowly again, the loco then proceeds to move off and I will get either 3 or 2 blasts of the horn, dependant on the direction of the loco.

As I use Train Engineer for control, I just tap on the increase speed key slowly, and I find it easier than when I'm using the LGB controller with a rotary knob. With the TE, it's almost like notching up, but very finely, and it's part of the enjoyment of actually 'driving' this loco.

As others have said, it is possible to add a reed switch for the horn sounds (something I personally haven't done, although I have track magnets for visiting locos that do), as well as a 'battery buffer' to keep the sound on when your loco is stationary (with no track power).

Have a look at these Youtube links, that should explain much better than I can in words....

Just aquired one of these off another forum member for my 2091.

Can't wait to get it fitted up, and now there's loads of useful info on here to help too.
