Ruritanian Railways - 2012

Work has commenced on the lighting system for the border station using Zenda depot's all-weather indoor workshop. The AnDel lights are very neat resin castings around a threaded 5mm brass rod. Although not shown, each is supplied with a grain of wheat bulb. Unhappily, the narrow brass tube is too small to fit a 3mm LED. A pity, as an LED would be so much better for long-term outdoor use. However, you can't win them all!

The border station's platform has been marked out to make sure lights are central on the platform and spaced apart evenly. The "station end" mark is to remind me later on which end gets connected to the power! The lights' threaded rods are very long: far too long for the space I have available above a solid wood base, so pretty substantial trimming is required.

The first three lights in situ. More to come, plus power feeds. That's tomorrow's job, Royal Mail permitting...

Wow they look excellent. I was wondering the same as mel. Zenda workshops must be able to get around it somehow. They really bring that platform to life...

You do realise these develpments mean we will have to stay longer at open days?
 
Something else. As you look down that platform it has a proper length to it. I reckon even on garden narrow gauge models they are often too short - never really noticed before but looking down that one it kind of feels like you would have a short walk one end to the other. Feels real.
 
Fair comment, but rule 8 applies even on the prototype.
This platform is barely one coach long, what's more with that tight curve and cutting in the background it's usually the second from the rear on up trains and second from the front on down otherwise the loco crew can't see the guard give the right away!

Thanks for the various kind comments. To be honest, I plan for my eyes' perception of what looks OK. I have to live with the results every day (and Mrs Whatlep's crisply stated opinions :@ ) . If it works for others that's a bonus, but rule 8 applies at all times, even in Ruritania!

Tents on the far side are certainly possible. Did I mention that it's a flood plain? :bigsmile:
 
Ruritania's p(h)easants have been complaining about the lack of trains today. Several have been seen walking down the tracks, a most foolish act. Ruritanian Railways MD apologised for the absence of trains and assured press correspondents that there was no truth in the rumour that key RR operatives were suffering from a hangover after a particularly lively Wednesday night out.

What did the two pheasants say as the loco came towards them at speed?.......BRACE YOURSELF! :rolf::rolf: ...... hat, coat and out the door.........
 
Today, Ruritanian Railways has mainly featured red. A full rake of eight hoppers climbs away from the stone crusher hauled by Might Mouse (Mk2). Progress is slow, but steady: there'll be no slipping. Looks like the Royal Ruritanian gardening squad have been out with their scythes too!

A Wednesday walk down to Zenda station found the railcar waiting to act as the "school run" to Polapiko.

The main attraction of using the railbus is to arrive at Polapiko in time to see the WOPA (Wednesday only parcels train with passenger accommodation). The inbound working pauses for loading to be performed.

A murky day, but at least it's the end of the working week. Almost time for the 16.45 Fridays Only through service for Bratislava to depart Zenda. The mail stowage vehicle is at the front, making it easy for mail vehicles to drive straight onto the platform and transfer mailbags directly from road to rail. Letters posted at lunchtime in Ruritania will be on Slovakian breakfast tables tomorrow (Slovak Post permitting).

Just had a s*** week. Sat down with a glass of red and see what's happening in Ruritainia. This hobby of ours is good for the soul. And this website means you can enjoy it when it's most needed.

Talking of things needed I do love those railbuses.
