Regner Otto on the H&MGR

My new Regner Otto is still undergoing "acceptance trails", "testing", or maybe just playing :D, as I work though ideas in my tiny little mind as to changes I will make to in, including a bush tramway (logging) type body. It's a great wee loco. Anyway here is a wee video as it steams around the H&MGR. :D

Apologizes if your following the topic on the H&MGR for the duplication :)

Good to see one running downunder. What´s you experience with starting it? One cylinder, non-self starting and the flywheel hidden in the depths of an inaccessible cabin ::) ???

BTW what onboard camera were you using? :o

Yes the small flywheel is a bit of a pain when starting initially, when the cylinders are cold and the condensate is being cleared. Once warm it's usually just a small flick and it's away, though I've been lucky with it self starting maybe 25% of the time which I guess happens if the cylinder stopped at the right place. Something I've also found is, and I'm not sure if this is really good for it (input from wiser heads needed), but gently pushing down and rolling Otto along with it in gear and regulator open it will start without putting my pinkies inside to spin the flywheel.

As for the camera, it is my iPhone in held in a pivoting cradle on a Hartland bogie flat wagon. I copied ideas I'd seen here on GSC and in mags for a arm coming off the bogie which swings the cradle a bit to steer the camera on curves. I'll take some photos of it if you'd like. :) It's not very fancy!

Yup, with Otto I´ve found that I can start him if I press down on the roof to improve adhesion and push in the direction of travel. As the roof can get a little hot the experience is off limited pleasure. But Otto is nice to watch pottering round the line, once he gets moving.

And also a good loco for onboard video. So I´d be interested in any pics of your cunning solution ::)

I cant see any problem with bump starting an Otto. So long as too much force is not used to clear a water locked cylinder.
iIs it an oscillating or valved cylinder?

Regner´s Otto is an osci.

Thanks, thought so.

Great film, she looks at home on your railway :)

Nice John.

Afraid mine's been a shelf queen since it arrived. Unfortunately jobs in the garden have taken over the past couple of weeks, but I've promised myself an Otto run next weekend.

Thanks for all your help and advice. Water top-up kit is now fitted, all nuts and bolts checked and tweaked so I'm all ready to go.

John,
Nicely edited and well thought out Vid. Bit of a white knuckle ride with your outrigged phone at the Tunnel at about 2.15 in. Thought it looked tight and indeed the Camera got a clunk going out of the Tunnel. Hope no damage to the phone. Couple of points:-

-Yes please would love to see the Camera Swivel set up.

-Did you edit on the Phone, if so what app please?

Many thanks in advance,
JonD

Yes Jon quite right the iPhone was just sticking it`s head out a bit far at about 2:15!  No damage done, hehe iPhone are tough  ???
Oh yes editing.  Nothing done on the phone, imported to my MacBook and edited in iMovie.  The onboard clips was done in two rides with segments cut to match in with the stack camera clips.  :)

Right, the camera wagon, a pivoting table on a Hartland wagon fitted with metal wheels.  Originally made to take SWMBO`s video (unused - sigh) camera but since I got an iPhone (thanks work) I added the cradle to hold it and it works better I think.

Underneath view and you can see the wire arm that swings the cradle as the bogie turns.

View without the iPhone in the cradle.  The piece of styrene coated wire slips into the tube glued to the wagon deck to give a little bit of resistance as the table swings, without it the table is inclined to waggle a bit.

Last one, a close up of the lady susan bearing the table pivots on.

Originally when setting up for the video camera the theory was the camera should pivot around the focal point of the lens to maintain the steadiest image.  The along came the iPhone and I gave up on the theory, it is only a phone camera and garden railways not the next installment of the Hobbit after all  :-

Hope that is of help and interest  ;D

Thanks for this. I´ll see whether I have the room on the K&NWLR to drive an iPhone round the track. ??? ::)

John,
Brilliant, many thanks for the 'heads up' as they say in gobbldegook IT land. Have a couple of suitable Bogie Flats just waiting for the Cradle cadd on.

Loving that pivoting iPhone cradle John. Real "blue sky thinking" as they also say in gobbledygook IT land.
