Red paint to match LGB loco chassis...?

Just wondered if anyone here knows of a paint reference (spray can or brushed), that is readily obtainable, which is a close match to the "very red" red that LGB use for things like the basic Stainz chassis and the underframes of most DR black bodied locos?

And while I'm asking, what is the best match (in spray can form) for the almost-satin black of most LGB loco bodies? Is there any easy way to replicate the factory finish, which is more matt than gloss but just has that faint hint of a sheen to it....?

Don't think you'll match the red very well..
I would either make it an 'obvious' repair, or blow the lot over.

For the black, I would tend to paint a section. - Boiler, smokebox, cab, or tanks. Then either blow the whole over with a satin varnish, or just go over it with a inch-and-a-half paint brush with a few drops of smoke oil on it.
 
The only way to get an exact match on the red is to go to an auto paint specialist. I use one in Milton Keynes. Take the chassis in and they can "scan" it to mix an exact match, 500 ml rattle can, 1 pack.

The satin black can be quite difficult as the finish will be different from make to make.One "Matt" will come up satin and vise versa..Again take a sample of what you want to the auto paint specialist and they may be able to come up with what you want. Remember you need to spray in non humid conditions as that can affect your finish. Max.
 
Thanks Phil and Max - will have to try to find a paint matching specialist somewhere local-ish, anyone in the North Essex area know of one?

Phil, nice suggestion about the "obvious repair", that would always add character to a loco..... A welded-on patch or two, painted in a "not-QUITE-matching" colour. :)

I used Halfords matt black primer for my Stainz. cab. it looks fine with the original boiler colour but perhaps the boiler has a little more gloss to it.

Thanks Alan, that's useful - you just left the black primer as the final finish, no varnish or anything else over the top?

It looks just fine in that pic of your Stainz.

I found the Revell Ferrari or Fiery red (I can't remember which one) was a very close match to the Stainz red. It's water based and actually brushes on very smooth.

Are Revell paints still available in the little aerosol cans, or only in brushable form?

Just had a quick look on eBay and the sprays are still available. The Fiery red is silk whereas the Ferrari red is gloss. I really can't remember which one matched and it doesn't help I have both in my paint box. I'd try them against my Stainz but as we've just moved everything is boxed and packed away.
 
Little tip about Revell paints.They nearly all have RAL numbers on them. An auto paint specialists , as previously mentioned, should be able to reproduce these as well as from BS (no jokes please) colour references. Whether you want a touch-in or rattle can. Remember to use the correct colour base coat/primer or you will get a mismatch. Max.
