Piko BR50 Locomotive

Hi does anyone have any experience of this locomotive? Thinking of getting one but would like feedback from someone who has owned one.

Hi Mark, of course I have a Piko BR 50 in my inventory. The locomotive is very long, so it's not suitable for tight curves like the LGB R1/R2. It would have to be the LGB R3, if possible larger, e.g. the LGB R5.
The locomotive has a DCC digital decoder from ESU built in, and it runs without any problems.

I have the 2-10-2 that uses pretty well the same chassis and yes it is not happy on LGB R1 points in a crossover. But it will happily go round a curve or circle of R1 but clearly looks silly.

Hi Mark,
A friend has a BR50 and had problems with it shutting down due to the decoder being unable to tolerate the higher voltages that his DCC system put out. Once we set his central station output to 19V or less it was fine but it couldn’t handle even 22.5V like any DCC compliant G scale decoder should be able to do. Helmut says his has an ESU decoder which I’m assuming he had installed aftermarket instead of the factory Piko one. Anyway…that’s my $.02…

Hi, I drive my ESU Ecos with 18V in G and H0 gauge.
18V and 15A Booster on the track, for G gauge
below are the data for the power supply.
• N gauge: 15V - 16V
• H0 two-wire (DCC): 16V - 18V
• H0 three-wire: 18V - 20V
• 1 gauge: 18V - 21V
• G gauge: 20V - 21V

oh I forgot, the Piko BR50 has the number.

The BR 50 has an ESU 5XL decoder installed. All of my locomotives have an ESU decoder. Except for two new Dash9s from Bachmann, which have a Zimo decoder installed because there were no ESU decoders at the time.
