Options to avoid sharp corner, & steep grade ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

And on a round the corner, got another 10 ft to go yet

Pretty well pooped with all that concentrated effort last few days or so

so been playing with "Sketchup"

this is the idea for the extension track vaguely in mind

track leaves tunnel at right, goes along mountain ledge,

crosse bridge over estuary/river

and accesses quay area siding

other track goes on to complete the return loop

( not all that clever with sketch up yet, but it gives a general representation)

Filled in between battens with weak concrete mix,

filled with well draining mix

one part 5mm gravel

one part compost

and some plants added

5mm gravel added to simulate scree slope,

Time will tell how much the rain may bounce out

20 or so cuppressus planted along the top

these are all from prunnings taken 2 -3 years ago

And just stuck in the gound in front of Limekilns Station, 90 % of which grew

Two Lewissias planted sideways on, & in about 1 inch & facing East,

to keep rain off the crowns or they rot off

Cuppressus, Elwoods Gold, planted sideways, given time this will grow upwards towards the light

And another one,

to plant these properly, I had to dig down inside the planter to spread the roots out,

part back fill with soil, water, & finish filling to top

One question regarding planting in the cliff faces with the conifers, how do you do for watering, do you have to do loads in the warm weather?
Cheers

A couple have survived 3-4 years so far no probs

1 Died a couple years back when newly planted & we were away for 3 weeks & it was scorching at home, that one did not have a chance but normally, they are ok

BUT when doing the planters I always line them with plastic sheet to save the moisure being absorbed by the blockwork

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Yesterday late on, I got down to laying some track,

& doing first step of the ballasting with a dry sand cement mixture brushed into place

then spraying with a water mist,

Then this morning when it had formed a hard skin, but still soft underneath,

gave it a good soaking with a watering can

will take 3-4 days to set properly though

QUOTE(Technicianjames @ Mar 16 2009,

What method of track laying do you use?
Does the frost/summer heat buckle and change the track? - Quote

Hi James

as it is mostly raised off the gound, the track utilises the concrete/brick/block as a sub base,

where I use Peco flexible track

it can be fixed to battens set in the sub base,

& ballasting is sometimes a cement/dry sand mix brushed in & mist sprayed over to hold it, but not be immovable

some ballasting is fine 2mm chipping sieved out of builders all in aggregate,

which is what the extension will be getting,

in this case, as a top off after the dry mix,

just to hide it, as I am running out of fine chippings

when using set track, as in Wheal Prospect branch, I generally just use the dry mix without the battens

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

As for track buckling, no problems, I do tend to leave about 3mm gap when laying,

Did have just one case of a fractured rail, but thought that was due to dropping something on it when it was frosty,

But although the garden gets quite hot in summer, being in deepest Devon we get very little real low temperatures

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

2mm chippings spread on top of cemnet/sand mix, (when dry)

This will be fixed with a dilute pva mix soon as I get some more,

In the past when I have done ballasting with just the 2mm chips, it took an enormous amount of pva glue to hold it in place,

this way I have only a thin layer to hold so can use a stronger dilution & less of it all told
