NZ Earthquake damage!

Kaik.png

See what looks like a river at the top of photo.... that's the Pacific Ocean. All that land beyond that, was raised up from the seabed.

While they (or rather we in Oz) call them the Shaky Isles, it's getting a bit ridiculous. Although the death toll was amazingly and mercifully low, the poor old NZ economy's going to be in a bit of a mess if they get too many more.

Also a bit lucky that there was an International Naval Review planned in Auckland this week end - so lots of warships with helicopters from Aust, NZ, US, Singapore etc, besides the RNZN, in the area and able to assist.

To use the vernacular, those Navies were in town for a piss up. It's the 75th anniversary of our Navy. Actually, they are all getting plenty of kudos for doing something useful. We have got a Japanese Navy flight doing real in depth photo reconnocence of the railway. Our Navy photo blokes have the technology to calculate slip volumes and all sorts of things, to help efficiently organise the recovery.

Very worrying time for all of you in Nz, can anyone indicate where the Rail Damage was I have a decent Map of the Railway Systems and would like to see the effected area.

Visited the Country in 1995 and just loved the place. A very tempting Country to move to, but my time is now gone. Could have done it in that Year as I was in IT and could have been Sponsored by my ex Wifes Sisters Family. But Mum n Dad were alive so too far to go from them. Now I am retired and too old. In view of recent events of Biblical Natures, perhaps it was fortuitous that I did not go.

Hope you guys and extended families are all OK, all the people I met in Nz were really great set of People.

It is in the South Island (notice I say in, rather than on), on the East Coast, between Christchurch and Picton. Well, that is the line all the damage is on, more specifically, between Spotswood and Vernon stations. All the pictures you see, with any coastal views, are within 20 miles each side of Kaikoura (roughly the halfway point).

I find it a mystery, where Mystery is?
It seems to be mentioned a lot when Googling for it, but as a 'business' name, rather than an area / locality.

That's sad. Never say too old, too infirm perhaps, too many commitments in Blighty maybe, but not too old. Whether they would have you or not is another matter... :-)
