NW2 CALF UNIT

Buy now for 200.00 GBP - Expired
i have for sale a brand new USA TRAINS NW2 CALF UNIT.....Union Pacific. It has been ran for one session from new to check it works. Is in as new condition, with all parts/rails etc as part of the sale....In original bag....The photo just shows the unit with smoke stacks in position.Bell and all other parts come with this as new.One slight issue i noticed when running this...one of the wheel axles slips out of the hole on the silver side frame occassionally.NO IDEA WHY THIS HAPPENS,THERE IS NO DAMAGE,and i cannot see why this happens. The axle can easily be prised back into the sideframe axle hole. The side frames are available to purchase for about 15 pounds from USA trains in Malden MS USA...I have always found then helpful when i have telephoned.....Love their Accents !!! ..Should this be an issue that a new sideframe needs purchasing.Wanted to point this one negative out.Looking at 200 plus about 16 pounds postage...Knocked a bit off because of the possibility a buyer may want to purchase a new side frame...Perhaps if you have a union pacific nw2 Cow Loco..This Calf could be for you....For those that don`t know the Calf is fully powered in the same way as the NW2 Loco is..Has Smoke Capability,Light....A powerful loco, effectively without a cab....Thanks for reading....Ade

PLEASE SEE COMMENTS FROM GREG BELOW AND MY REPLIES REGARDS THE ISSUE I MENTIONED ABOUT AXLE SLIPPING OUT OF SIDEFRAME.THINK I CAN GET THIS SORTED BEFORE ANYONE POSSIBLY PURCHASES....IT IS NOT A CRACKED GEAR CASING FOR SURE THANK GOODNESS.

It's not the side frame, the axle set consists of 2 metal half axles with wheels and a plastic center with a gear.

Most likely the axles are pushed into the gear too far making the axle too short and falling out. The plastic gear casting has a great propensity to crack and let the axle loose to move in and out and slip while turning. Brand new out of the box, completely unused is not uncommon.

Replacement axles are available, as well as inexpensive ways to fix them.

All info on my site.

Hello Greg.....HAVE JUST LOOKED THROUGH YOUR SITE AND FOUND THE SECTION ON THIS ISSUE....FOLLOWED THE ADVICE TO SEE IF THERE IS THE PROBLEM OF A CRACKED GEAR CASTING....IE ...BY ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE WHEELS IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS BY USE OF THUMB PRESSURE ON EACH WHEEL WITH LOCO ON ITS BACK...AS IT TURNS OUT THE WHEELS ARE SOLID LOCKED,WILL NOT TURN...TRIED ALL THE WHEELS IN FACT....SO ITS NOT A SPLIT / CRACKED GEAR CASTING ISSUE....lOOKING AT THE SIDEFRAME IT DOES ACTUALLY APPEAR TO BE SLIGHTLY WARPED OUTWARDS ON THE OFFENDING AXLE/WHEEL....SO I STILL THINK ITS JUST THE PLASTIC SIDE.FRAME..WILL BE INTERESTED TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS....GREAT SITE YOU HAVE BY THE WAY..CHEERS..ADE

Yes, I have seen warped sideframes, but very unusual. Good deal on the axles, the fix will be simple and a lot cheaper.

Good for you and the site is there to help others. BTW, I have had about 6 new locos that had cracked axles out of the box. Takes a bit to fix, but can be done inexpensively, and USAT parts are available, good locos to have.

Eyup Ade. Inhad the same issue with my first NW2. The wheels and axel were absolutely fine but keot popping out if the Axle Box. I came to the conclusion it was the bogie thatvwas warped slightly. I git some brass rodding to make a brace that pulls the frame in slightly. Cost a couple of quid and invisible when the loco is running. Hope this helps.
