The layout is still looking a little bare at the moment as most of the buildings and structures are still in winter storage, but a few light repairs and touch ups they'll be back out for the new season too.

esp the use of all the rocks
I really like the look of the line curving throuch the rocky defile with the different grades of ballast / gravel infill giving depth
I'm trying to achieve a similar look, but its taking a while

The rocks sort of happened by accident actually! When we first started construction a few years ago we began building from the middle of the garden as this was the best place to take all the relative grades and measurements from. This area was originally just a very wide path so we needed some way in which to separate the railway and the ballast from the larger granite chips on the path. Luckly we have large rocks here in abundance, so we were experimenting by simply placing them down and it just seemed to work! It had the really pleasant effect of softening the area and helping to blend it all together in a way that other materials like log roll etc could never do. Not that I'm knocking them as materials and techniques, it's just that we set out to keep it as natural looking as we could.
