New Loco arrives for Peggles & Frogland

If you enlarge the photo of the Shay in the head-on shot, you will see that it has the off-center boiler typical of all Shays . The only Shay to have a centered boiler was the one built for the Ford Motor Company. It was construction number 2640 . The story about it is that Mr. Henry Ford didn't like the apperance with the boiler offset , and had it rebuilt to center it on the frame. This from the book , " Titan of the Timber " by Mr Michael Koch .

Shays were also built with left hand drive mechanisms too. One of them construction number 826 went to the Octaviano B. Cabrera in Mexico . They only built 4 Shays with left hand drive.

Gave the Shay a trial run today on some test track along the path.It is fitted with phoenix sound & is also rigged up to run on battery power from a trailing truck. Have been a few teething problems. Ran fine in reverse to start with but then cut out when going forward. After awhile ran in both directions but then cut out again. Seems to be a short as lamp does not power up. Tried another loco that arrived this week, a little Davenport & it ran fine in both directions so don't think it is track. May be it draws to much power?
Anyway when it was running it was great.

You're excited aren't you? We can tell by the camera shake :rolf:
Nifty little loco, would send me all of a shudder too

Have taken a few more pics today without my glasses on.
The trials continued today, gave the moving parts a light oil & loco running has improved & it is drawing much less power.
The tribulation also continues, runs superb in reverse but not forward.Get a little flicker on the lamp & then nothing.Did get one blast of sound once in the forward position & then died. Any ideas?
The sound is incredible. The speaker is mounted in the chimney spark arrestor & you can here the loco in the house with the doors & windows shut.

[align=center]Throw yer specs away, picture superb what a sweet looking engine that is like the idea of the speaker in the stack that is neat.

you said this is running with a battery is there track power as well? most things work slightly better one one way than the other but this sounds more to it, especially if the light goes out? I had a loco that had one set of drivers not in line with the rest would run perfect one way and jammed solid the other , check for 90 degree cranks all round, that is on the cylinders, disconnect the drive to the front truck test, same rear set, then both sets, see if the light comes on,with no load on the wheels run it on blocks, sorry if all is egg sucking

Thanks for advice Pete. The loco is running on track power but can also be switched for battery power form a trailing truck. There is a connector wired up at rear of the shay for that & a switch under the loco for track or battery power. When the loco arrived the drive shaft to front truck had slipped out. It was easy to pop back in by turning truck off centre, lining the shaft up & returning to centre. I think there are 2 vertical pistons from the motor that power all the mechanics to the shafts that drive the trucks. The drive shafts to the trucks seem to be at a very slight angle in a straight line, must be some flexibility to drive round curves. I don't have a rolling road but a fellow centralist nearby does. Will ask if he will help me out to test your theory.

Thanks Mick,
How you getting on with the "Annie"? Still going to all the shows or are things slowing down now that dark days are here?
Stuart

Hi Stuart - yes the Annie is fine. My mods to the bogie seem to work better than the original. Nice loco. Last show (agricultural of course out here in the West) would have been last month but it was too far away (at least three hours drive each way). Trailer ensconced in hay shed whilst I ponder modifications to the track layout.

Shays are intereting locomotives. Many saw logging and other industrial uses.

There was even a 760mm gauge one sent to the Austrio-Hungarian area, I think it ended its days in Slovenia (Yugoslovia). It was bought/imported by Krauss-Linz and operated on a test basis on the StLB if memory serves.

The Austrian Shay was works number 2504 and was built for Karl Petrachek

Sweat. I love the shays just wish I could afford one.

Shawn it was your fantastic railroad that inspired me to go the logging/mining road. I hope to build a small layout in my shed this winter, a small end of line depot similar to yours & run the shay on that. With your permission I thought I would call it "Shawnekitty". Funded most of it by selling off most of my Aristocraft stock. Still got a loco & caboose to go which I will use to get some logging disconnects & iron mountain coal cars.

I cant wait to see pictures of yyour railroad when you start. Logging RR is fun to model. What I like most is the rustic look a logging railroad has plus structures etc.... dont have to be built perfect as they were made to function not look nice. I like the name you can use it. At one point I was going to give my line a nick name and call it the tin kitty line.
I love that shay you got looks great.

Hi Stuart
Lovely loco you have there. Will see you tomorrow sometime depending on the delivery that did not arrive today :wits:

Found these shays

A real 'made this on the spot' feel to this one

Blimey Siamese twin engineers!!

Cheers Mike, give us a ring when you're free. Like the pics, that's the good thing with these lines they cobbled things together with whatever came to hand.Interesting pic of the ladies, perhaps we should have a Shay Day next year & people can dress the part.
