We have had a number of new residents arrive at the CFR. Father Christmas is just getting ready to leave for his winter quarters. The Vicar is giving his blessing. Private Sponge and his wife are posing for the camera, as are the ATS, Wrens and Land Army girls. Sgt Hazelwood as taken a shine to one of them. Sgt Major Dollmann is making sure that Father Christmas gets on his way.

All the figures were made and painted by Rob Bennett and were special commissions.

These two PIKO GE 25T Switching locomotives arrived at the CFR last week. They are both battery powered and radio controlled. The battery power is provided by 6AAA batteries which are held by a battery case located inside the hood. The RC is from a key fob controller.
I have carried out running time trials. The results can be found in my “Today at the CFR” thread.

The CFR has taken delivery of another locomotive. This time it is another Piko GE 25T Switching locomotive which will be employed on track cleaning duties:-

Quite how well it will manage with gunk from live steam would be open for debate, but clearing dust and small debris should be fine.

Jon I intend to give it a decent trial, if it fails , I can always remove the skates and operate it as a normal locomotive. When I saw this advertised it stated in the advert that it was battery powered with RC, in fact it came with the key fob RC transmitter, but it obviously isn’t RC. So I will have to get a RC receiver for it.

Erm it should be, the Piko key fob transmitter does operate a RC receiver. Did you get it new and have you read and understood the instructions? Sorry to sound granny sucking eggs and all that, but I do have a Railcar that I fitted up with the system and did a Diesel loco for a friend both run fine with the RC. If the battery in the Tx is a bit weak the loco will not run but you are clearly getting it to run presumably by just turning it on so all sounds odd.

The Piko track cleaning loco has a 3-position (forward-off-reverse) switch, and is not RC. - Unless retro-fitted.

The Piko RC has eight channels, but both Tx and Rx must be set to the same channel using rotary switches.

A seller not familiar with the items, could have mixed the fobs?

It seems to me that the red cleaning locos have RC and the yellow ones do not. Not 100% sure.

My green one didn't have RC either (until I got my hands on it, that is!)

Confirmed Red one RC as shown in this TopSlots link. Not sue about the yellow one as he does not appear to list it.

It must have been upgrades with the RC PCB if it has a fob?

If you can take a photo of the cob which has the switch on it, I can confirm whether it is the original cob or a upgraded RC PCB, which has a short black aerial on it....

Jon, the key fob came with the locomotive. I purchased it new. I have read all of the instructions and there is no mention of radio control. The off/on / direction switch operates as per the instructions.

The locomotive was new and had all the seals in place. It has the 3 position switch. There is no Rx rotary switch located beneath the locomotive like my other two locomotives.

Hm this all begs the question was it bought as a RC Locomotive or not. If not (price should reflect this) then perhaps the Fob Tx was packed in error by Piko?

The Gaugemaster website offers both the yellow and red versions. Both are described as "Battery Powered RC" but look at the price differential . . .

1698139013850.png

The description of the red one says . . .

1698139141171.png

The description of the yellow one just says . . .

1698139083174.png

Finally, the Piko website mimics that price differential and doesn't include "R/C" in the title of the yellow one . . .

You can buy the whole set from "ECR" on evilbay for £349.99 including plastic track :

The loco is RC - I bought this set minus the plastic track for £249.99 two years ago.

I didn't like the colours though...................

EDIT - this set did include Piko brass track too ! Prices have shot up again (rolls eyes)
