My LGB 24771 Porter has eaten a smoke unit in analogue.

When running in analogue mode my LGB 24771 Porter burnt out a smoke unit. Is there any way to turn the smoke unit off for analogue mode in the decoder? I can set the voltage to zero for DCC mode, but that didn't appear to effect analogue mode. I really don't want to waste an relatively expensive smoke unit just for the occasional run in DCC of this Porter. I have another one that I use in DCC because it runs quieter than this one in DCC mode.

If you don't put any smoke oil in the unit the unit it is off, it will only switch on when the oil makes contact with the inner element and the inside body of the unit. If you do not use the correct smoke oil the element will get to hot and will burn out. I use LGB or Massoth smoke oil.

This happened when it ran out of smoke oil. I guess it doesn't turn itself off. Was using the 'sample' that came in the box with the new engine, I assume it was LGB/Marklin, I no longer have the little bottle 6to check it. Of course it could have been a defective smoke unit or if the "turn-off" is electronic, it may have been bad. Will do the 18volt replacement as I have a unit with Brown/Yellow wires.

First time I've heard any mention of a cut-off in these LGB/Seuthe/Graupner smoke units (all made by Seuthe as far as I know), I've always understood they're just simple heating elements as Greg says.

It's usually said that these smoke units won't burn out if left on when empty (unlike some other brands), but obviously better to switch off where possible.

No mention of a cut-off in the details of any of the Seuthe smoke generators used by LGB.
