Massoth XLS sound decoder in LGB 220 Diesel Loco

Hi all, Ive got a LGB (20940) 220 diesel loco thats had a Massoth XLS sound decoder fitted when I bought it , Unfortunately Ive never had any sound from the unit at all , I have a LGB 55045 programme module and using the Massoth software was able to get the lights working and the loco to run , but alas I can not access the XLS board so do I need the Massoth Dimax programming module 8175201 to be able to program and check the XLS board.
If I do need this Massoth module is there anywhere i can get one second hand or new.

You only need the Programming module if you wish to update the XLS on board software and sounds. The 55045 together with the latest Massoth Service Tool should be enough to access and configure the XLS decoder.

My first suggestion would be for you to use the Service Tool to read ALL of the XLS CVs and then save the file. Attach it here (or email me) so that we can see how it is configured.

Massoth tend to use F6 to switch the sound on & off and also F5 to start up/shutdown the sounds so when the loco is on track, issue F6. I would then Issue F1 to see if switching the amp on/off allows the horn to be triggered. If it does then try F5 and see how it goes.

Also, what Central Station/Handset are you using?

Sorry forgot to say the loco looks like it has an LGB decoder inside which linked to the Massoth XLS board via interface cable.

Hi

1) What central station Central Station & handset you are using? This is important due to point 2. If it is an LGB MTS2 system is it Parallel enabled?
2) The decoder is set to handle Parallel functions only (CV49 bit 0 is off)
3) The decoder is set to 14 speed steps, Digital & Analogue Ops (CV29 = 4)
4) The amplifier ON/OFF function is using the default F6
5) The shutdown/startup sequence trigger is using F5

I believe the 20940 was analogue and equipped with a 10pin DCC interface so I would imagine that the XLS using it,

Hi muns , im using an LGB MTS 2 system with parallel controllers as they all have P on them , im assuming they are already Parallel enabled .
I have motor control forward /reverse and light on/off control but still no sound .
I tried the F6 command and then F1 for amp on/off and still no sound .

Back to basics - are you sure its an XLS and not an XL?.
Is there a speaker fitted?
is it plugged in?

XLS (CV255 = 148).

Are all of your MTS components P enabled (Central Station, Handsets, Wireless receiver & transmitter modules)?

Ok.... As the decoder is set for Parallel only, please do the following...

On the MTS handset, call up the loco.

Trigger function 6 (Press 6) to switch the amp on/off .... count how many times the display flashes....

If it flashes only once, it is in Parallel mode. If it flashes 6 times then it is in Serial mode - Press the F button then the 9 button and try again (it should now only flash once).

I have a crocodile that I've just got lights and power to but when its placed on the track you get the
startup/shutdown sound sequence and then no sound . when running this cycle you can make the announcement ,whistle etc work but once
it stops nothing at all , lift of the track place back on and it does same cycle .
heres a pic of the boards inside and ive checked all connections are firm

You may well find that F8 turns the sound off/on in an original LGB sound-equipped loco..

When you first put it on the track, the electronics gets volts and you get an initial burst of sound as they sort themselves out.

I have very limited experience of LGB sound on digital. but I'd like to make the following observations.
The sound board and speaker must be working to give the limited sounds you are getting. To get the other sounds the board needs to know that the loco is moving and at what speed.
I notice an empty socket on the bottom left of the left hand board that may be for the speed sensor, then again such a socket is also used for reed sensors.
Has your loco got a speed sensor, is it in working order and plugged in?

Perhaps I might pitch in with a query on this general topic.
Last year I had a Massoth XLS card fitted to my Bachmann K27 by P&S Models.
I was assured that the lights and firebox flicker were both enabled however, on running the loco I discovered none of the lights worked.
I exchanged emails with Paul who suggested that the reason was probably that the loco was set to 27 speed steps. That is not the case it is on 14 steps.
Unfortunately, none of my subsequent emails evoked a response and so the loco has been running "in the dark" ever since. Annoying.

Also, the volume is too low when run outdoors. My LGB Sachsen-Meyer blows the hat off the K27 volume-wise.
Any ideas about how I might remedy the situation would be appreciated.
I use MTS3 parallel.

I tried but no answer to emails and it is a trek across the country, possibly x2, to return it.
I have to say that over the years I have had little joy from "professionals" when it comes to GScale purchases. Early on one loco from a 'well known' retailer was dead on arrival. A second loco from a different supplier, the initial K27, was also DOA, its replacement was the wrong model but I decided to keep it. When it was opened up to fit the Massoth card the wiring was found to be much altered and melted even though it was supplied new. That shop no longer trades! Another 'well known retailer' made a shambles of 2 sound cards almost wrecking the electronics and he also supplied the wrong impedance rubbishy speaker.
I have fared much better with s/h and purchases from abroad.

Blinking heck - that sounds like a lot of bad luck. I have to say, I have not had problems like that but the suppliers I have moaned to have all been supportive.
Use your credit card - the card company will do the speediest refund going.
