I finally got round to repainting my RS3. Its going to be in a maroon livery made up for my own line and have yellow lettering on the cab. The photo shows it after the first coat - it needs another one.

It was going to be two tone with maroon on the lower part and grey higher up - similar to Union Pacific only maroon instead of yellow. Now it has a coat of maroon I'm thinking that maybe all over one colour is more in keeping with a short line than a two tone livery. Just wondered what others thought.

Nice job... yeh also what era are you thinking. I am no expert but very generally things were a bit plain pre 70s... did you achieve that with a rattle can?
 
Who cares about what the prototypes did. Personally, I would make it maroon and red. Possibly a black stripe to separate the two colors. I always liked the Chicago and Alton's coach color scheme.
 
The maroon base looks great, perhaps using a darker maroon for the cab roof and railings may enhance it.
I tried quite a few trial liveries for my home fleet, all dismissed for one reason tor another. I wanted something elegant and simple, finally settling on GWR Chocolate and Cream. Its traditional, yet locomotives didn't get painted in it, so it's original as well! Producing a home fleet can a long job, particularly as I hand-paint, but the slow emergence is worthwhile.
My latest project is an NW2 bought from Steven large via the Forum. It had been over-sprayed with red undercoat without varnishing and had the finish of medium sandpaper! After a good rub down repainting is taking shape, and still not finished, but here are a couple of photos.
It may give someone else inspiration to give repainting a go.... but dont forget things always look WORSE for a time once you start !

Now that looks a clean and tidy job, you obviously have a steady hand

That's looking a bit better that the colours it went from me to Steve in - glad someone's finally had the time to tidy it up again. (It came to me off ebay in the undercoat with permanent marker logos paint job, and I was going to rebuild/repaint it as the foster yeoman SW1001 before I changed direction and flogged it to Steve with the bodyshell looking just as dejected as when it arrived...)

Richie, Richie, I can see the maroon and the gold stiping. But where is the orange?

Maybe it's not orange was late last light when i looked at the pic . The coach Altona looks to be orange or a shade of red .

hi mate,,,,yes tht rite i did get from u and did run it..very good runner but i havent got no time to do it so tht why i have loads of fleets to be done...so glad it done by him..awesome job...clever he is !!!!

at the moment im looking for RS-3¬¬¬!!!!!!

That's the color scheme I remember from my Lionel days. I had a five car passenger train of heavy weight C&A cars. For some reason, most likely my lack of memory, I cannot place the gold stripes. I thought that they were black. Anyway, I always liked the combination of colors on a railway coach.
 
I got some Woodland scenics yellow lettering but the martoon showed through so I went for letraset white letters instead. I then had to work out how to complement the white lettering so I went for a white stripe. Did some testing in the sun today. I need to do a bit more work - the white needs another coat and a little road dirt is required. I also forgot to put the cab interior back so it'll have to come apart again.

Looks damn good Chris, I presume the letraset transfers are the rub down type

The steam fleet have also been re-lettered. This is minimal work without doing a full repaint - just removed the exisitng lettering, flashed over the area in black and then applied some lettering in a similar style to what had been removed. It isn't great but looks ok out in the garden.

No. 1 is supposed to be 1:22 scale and No. 5 1:20. Looks like Bachmann borrowed LGB's rubber ruler and then made it more flexible!

I may do a full repaint sometime in the future.

Like the re-lettering of the steamers and your reworking of the diesel. Didn't know you get Letraset still (I tried in Staples last time I was in England).
