LMS 2P gauge 1 build

ran my LMS 2P under steam tonite for the first time on test bench. blower pipe needs smaller bore to give more oomph, less steam, fire drawn ok when running so blast pipe must be ok. i fired up the boiler only last week to blast out the pipes before fitting cylinders once i had the chassis running ok on air. oiler works ok, maybe too much, better than too little while running in i suppose. using a spare tender for now, will make correct one when finished the loco. next jobs will be 2 matching safety valves, try cock in cab, smokebox door detail then cab and cladding. will post as progresses. martin..

hello, and welcome.. loooking dam good!!

hmmm, good point gareth, it probably would'nt fit anyway.... ;-). however, ... i might try putting a screw down valve into the manifold with piped outlet under cab to indicate the water level when filling as i do not bother with gauge glass. hope this clarifies.... martin.

Green Park, did you develop your own plans or is this a build from a set of plans?

Dave

i am using a scaled up scan of a frank roche drawing for general arrangement dave. the lubricator wont look right as i like to have it at the front instead of in the cab, but i can live with that. just been putting some downthrust on the front bogie tonite. recessed spring and ball bearing type. have put some side play control on it.  centre axle is unsprung, rear axle is, so trying to get a balance to keep it all on the track. martin....

p.s. the orange blob on the oil pipes is silicon gasket i sealed the smokebox with....... martin

I would say that the blower pipe is in a longitudinal stay from one end of the boiler to the other with a blower valve probably taken off of the steam turret in the cab

exactly right guys, steam and blower pipes and go through the boiler as standard G1 practice. steam is taken from a pipe to the dome into the middle of manifold and two valves let it out either side, regulator and blower. i will shape the handles later. i have swept them both to the left to give room for the clack valve on the backhead. the other take off behind the manifold is for the pressure gauge and water-level-check-valve (trycock) :-) ...yet to be made. martin

fired it up on the bench tonite and oil coming out of the oil filler cap screw. i should have countersunk it to enclose the o ring so instead i will try a copper washer. i expect you can buy them, but i drilled some holes in some thin scrap copper sheet, cut them out into squares, mounted them on a 3/16" bolt with a stiffer piece of brass each end and turned them down in the lathe. worked ok but bolt a bit off centre as i was rushing it while the engine was cooling off, but easily filed off to centre. see if it works tomorrow on the track. (weather permitting..) martin

fitted the water level check valve (trycock) tonite. used an old globe valve i had been saving for a rainy day. so rainy today, it washed away the trackbed at dawlish! my thoughts go out to those suffering in this awful weather.... martin

finally got some dry weather to try out the 2P on the track today. video on utube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N-36MVLC5E&feature=youtu.be    or type in  LMS 2P 4-4-0 loco first test run    and you should find it. seems to have a wobbly driving wheel and need to shorten the wicks as its blowing off too much, although i think the blower was still open a bit. couldnt hear it for the clatter of the wagons. need to lessen the springs on rear axle to drop more weight on crank axle. was slipping quite a bit. might wait until i have built cab etc as extra weight might put it right. encouraging run tho.
