LGB Sumpter Valley - Tender Coupling/Drawbar? Could Do Better

I've had this loco from new nearly 20 years ago. It's a good runner and sounds great. I've recently had it on my workbench to upgrade it's decoder and while having it closer to eye level the hook and loop coupler for the tender distracted my attention. Add the tender and the result is very poor.
LGB go to great lengths to make detailed models but then the tender couplings are seemingly dismissed as unimportant unless it is due to the requirement for R1 curves.
I don't have any tight curves on my railway so I decided to replace the couplings.

So I decided to make a better coupling and also add a fall plate for the safety of the footplate crew.
The original loop couplings were replaced with a more compact and chunky version.

The 2 new couplings are joined with a miniature U shaped drawbar that drops into place on 1 of the new couplings.

The coupled tender is now 10 mm closer to the loco.

Now all it needed was a fall plate, 3D printed with some surface texture.

The fall plate locates around the cab walls and just rests there without any modifications to the loco. Pictured here at the same location in the first photo.

The new couplings are now unobtrusive and look more appropriate.

Why couldnt LGB do this?

R1 requirements as you intimated, it brought about many compromises but there is always scope for mods if you are brave enough and not obsessed with resell value.
