Added LGB MTS II 22021 decoder to starter set Stainz, not really happy with the results. Marklin CS3 finds and can change CV values, played with the settings but no matter what a few issues remain
- sometimes the locomotive stutters for no reason, motion isn't smooth at times. sometimes it stops for no time
- cab light flickers
- sound can't be controlled digitally, I think the decoder doesn't have any sound function so speaker is still connected to the main PCB and voltage driven. speaker comes on beyond certain speed
Am I missing something ? any critical CV that might fix this ?

It was very tough to install the decoder as the locomotive has barely any space to work, I pulled few wires accidentally that had to be soldered back.... not worth the time if this is the result

I guess it is because it is an older decoder with only 14 speed steps, it might play up.

Check your CS3 supports this and adjust as required....

CS3 does not support 14 speed steps, but I am guessing this is the 'sandpaper' sound unit in the cab roof?
Not really designed for DCC, and you will have very little control.

Stuttering over points etc. will be due to short wheelbase for picking up power..
Check continuity down each side of the loco.
Clean wheel treads.
Clean wheel backs where the carbon brushes rub.
Check brushes are not excessively worn, or have a ridge and stick in the barrels.

Why exactly would you add this old decoder? Without a power pack you will likely lose power over any switch larger than R1 with a Stainz. I've found the Massoth LS decoder is the best sound decoder for these locos as it fits nicely in the boiler and there is enough room under the coal bunkers to add the Massoth power caps. Massoth has some new smaller power caps, which will fit even more easily.

Thanks guys
The decoder has 28 speed steps and it is set to 28 in CS3 as well. Loco is few months old so there is not much wear and tear on it so to speak. It seems the stutter only happen in digital operation as it doesn’t do it in analog mode. This particular Stainz has both factory sound ( in cab roof) and smoke but those aren’t controlled by the decoder so maybe something to do with that. Not sure. And yes it struggles over scissor crossing at low speeds.

And no good reason why I got this decoder I thought it was just convenient.

What is the model number for the masssoth decoder recommended?

The decoder is the Massoth LS, not hard to find. You need to have a sound file loaded onto it either by the seller or yourself with the Massoth PC module. They have a Stainz sound file.

If you are not interested in sound then I recommend a Massoth M decoder with power caps as well.

LGB decoder 55021 was a 14/28 speed step unit. There are at least 3 different versions of this decoder. I believe this info is in cv 105 and/or 106. If you have the LGB computer software this info is on the screen.
