lgb motor swap

Before I try it and end up chewing the gears, can you fit the older style LGB motor, (The ones that used end float ball bearings. ) into the later can type chassis. I realise that the universal type will fit both chassis, but does it work the other way round? Or will the lack of balls foul things up?
Regards,
Paul.

Is there still space in the newer gearbox moulding to re-use the old type balls (so to speak....)?

Jon.

Got a photo Paul....

I doubt there is a moulding to take the ball in the newer block?
In which case, there will not be anything to stop the end float.. This will certainly cause extra wear, and in some cases lock-up.

I don't think I would do it.

I would talk to Peter, at Chalk Garden Rail, before attempting this.

I've a suspicion that the the "older type" 2200 motors needed ball bearings but the 2201 didn't, however they look very similar to each other. I don't know how to identify one from the other. The later 62201 motors are the "can" version.

The ex 21012 motor block has no provision for ball bearings, so I'm toying with the idea of making a couple of brass faced spacers to give the same amount of travel. The flat metal plate in track powered Playmobil locos did the same job as the LGB balls, so it might be worth a try. Otherwise the motor fits perfectly, even the locating pin sits correctly and seems to run Ok under a test voltage.

Paul, look at the tips on the motor shafts. I thought the newer motors had a slightly longer rounded tip to take up the space of the missing bearings. I suspect as long as you use the bearings with the older motor, you probably would be okay.

According to LGB's list of parts from Trainli they only show 1 motor for all the # 62201, short shaft, the clearance in the new motor blocks are closer that the old and I don't believe the ball bearings are needed or will even fit

The older LGB motor needing the ball bearings added are always the ones with the red and black electrical contact units and the armature will move back and forth hence the 'fake thrust bearings' needed on the ends.
