All-

I am considering an LGB loco with an MTS chip and sound.

I do not operate DCC, and I am not particularly impressed by sound locos myself, but I do want to know, what and how the sound functions WITHOUT DCC operation. Is the sound always on, do you get the talking station call with each start, etc.

Thank you-

Garrett.
You must run them on Linear DC. PWM will "confuse" the DCC decoder.
Best to actually remove the decoder and set the DIP switches to ON. Sell the decoder.

You may have sound triggers if the loco was equipped with them. Otherwise only Diesel rumble or Steam chuff plus starting toots.

Thanks Tony. I already make sure not to run on PWM due to all of EPL's old warnings, but thank you for the tip.

The big question would be what would be the harm in neutering out the sound and decoder of the loco? The trigger would be nice for some more prototypical smoke. There are some guys using the USAT generators with splendid results.

LGB sound units work great on DC. You don't get all the sounds but the bell & whistle can be triggered by magnets. Its helpful if a sound storage capacitor or battery is connected & then the sound keeps going for a short time when the loco has stopped.
If the decoder is set for a 5V start the sound will work before the loco starts.

This is a link for a Loco that has a DCC Sound Chip running in Analog Mode.

Do not be put of by the jerky running, this is due to a Massoth Power Buffer (8151001). This appears to favor the Sound Unit rather than the motor. Other than this Sound Chip Loco's work fine on MTS.

When I can face the dismantling job on my Conversion to Shoe Horn a Staiz Chassis into a spare LGB Steam Tram body the Sound Buffer will be removed.
