Lgb Ge 4/4 Ii (28436) Problem (split From Blown 55020 Thread)

Hi folks,

You guys were so helpful before; I'm now hoping you can shed light on a new problem....

I have a brand new LGB GE 4/4 II (28436). Today I upgraded from an LGB 55000 Lenz CS, to a mark II 55005P (with parallel upgrade).

The train went for a minute of so, and then stopped and now fizzes and jolts and doesnt respond to throttle/function commands at all. I have a horrible feeling the decoder is fried.

What would be the best course of action? I'm wondering whether to open up the loco and attempt to replace the decoder from LGB/MASSOTH? Or, given the loco's only a couple of month's old, perhaps I should just return it to marklin in Germany for repair under warranty?

Either way, I don't want the same thing to happen again! Does anyone have any suggestions?

You could try reprogramming to Default Settings if it will let you, but a Fizing decoder suggests possible wrong instalation. But normally they only Fiz and do not run.

Oops got this wrong I think, you are talking Base Stations?

Yes, I'm using an LGB 55005P Central Station, but it's the loco which is the problem (my other 2 locos seem to work fine).

Interesting... How does one go about resetting a decoder? I have tried reprogramming it to a new address, but to no avail. I only have the LGB loco remote, not the Universal. Would this mean I can't do a hard reset?

It does surprise me somewhat that a decoder would just self-detonate, even if it is a new loco with an oldish central station. All the components are genuine LGB after all...

Probably so, U need a Universal or link via the LGB Computer Interface. Windows stuff I am afraid. Have the kit here, but you are a little bit away from me for a quick visit to sort. Anyone near Edinburgh can help Alex?

If it was me I would send it back under warranty. You paid a lot of money for that and it should work for more than a few months without blowing.
 
Presume it now doesn't work on your old command station either? Does sound like something's blown. Have you tried it on analogue DC ?

If it's blown , shouldn't it go back to the shop it came from in the first place rather than direct to Maerklin? It's up to the shop to organise repair/replacement under warranty.
 
This here brand new GE4/4 wouldn't have the new MFX decoder would it?
 
Had a look at some adverts and it seems this loco has an MTS decoder so it should work perfectly OK on the 55005p.
If possible, I would get the loco back to the seller. Let him test it.
 
The service diagram indicates an LGB Large Onboard decoder (i.e. Massoth).
 
What power supply are you using with the 55005p?
 
I was thinking..
'New' loco, would not have an (obsolete) 55020 decoder in it..

IF this is brand-new, with a Marklin decoder AND you were sold a 'mark II' MTS unit (which I presume is what I know as MTS II) ???

Then I am led to believe the new Marklin decoders do not work well with MTS II.

But first try turning off MFX support, and try again..
Also, does it run on analogue? - If so, then the decoder is probably OK..
 
Phil, I think we have established that its an MTS decoder. Also, an MFX should work on MTS2 but not on Serial MTS1
 
Hi all, thanks for all your responses - very informative.

I have sent the loco back to the seller. You're right, idlemarvel, it shouldn't have blown. The CS MTS II I upgraded to, when tested with other locos, also provoked a weird behaviour in other trains. I think the issue is multifactorial: a faulty CS, might've blown the MFX decoder, which was susceptible before. Who knows. Either way, you're right - it shouldn't have happened. All components were genuine LGB after all.

And sorry about hijacking an old thread earlier. Couldn't find out how to start a new one. Who do I put when it asks for "participants"? Excuse my ignorance.
 
Alex, ignore the 'participants 'bit. Just a title and your first post is all that's needed - just have a go - if it turns out carp we can always delete it. Don't worry - you wont break anything.
