The switcher is very useful in limiting the speed of the train, and taking some of the strain.
At around 3' 39" you can see the coupling chain tightening on the front of the orange wagon in front of the switcher as Frank S pulls.
I had been topping up the boiler through the run, it was at a good level when the gas finally ran out half way round the track. With quite a lot of energy remaining in the boiler, the train was able to make it to the yards before all pressure was lost.
