I have very little train knowledge. My LGB 50101 Jumbo Transformer is not working properly, may have died, or may be hooked up incorrectly.

In the event that it has indeed died what would you suggest would be a good replacement?

Do I now need to purchase two parts - a transformer and a power supply?

Thanks in advance.

So perhaps someone could link the instruction sheet, but if memory is correct there is not much to get wrong with hookup. Though I did used to be a little confused with my LGB Analogue Controller as there were 4 coloured outputs and I was never sure. 2 were numbered 3 (black) and 2 as 4 (white). You had to select one of each but not the two next to each other which is a little counter intuative. I imagine Jumbo might be the same.

My friends one is 150 miles away so cannot easily check.

Perhaps ‘DougLN’ could help he has one.

Finally once you are sure what your outputs are perhaps you could test them with a Light Meter or a 12v Bulb in a holder and some wire?

Is the 9 pin D connector plugged in the rear??? Without this....it can appear to be dead. There's a link between 2 pins...don't have time atm for a search. Maybe later....

check eBay for seller ugseller2014, and mall-star, 1 is upc transformers and the other is controllers, a friend stumbled on to this when he went to the Atlanta Garden railroad show a couple of months, says most of the members up there are using them with good results, sure can't beat the price, Bill

Thanks for all of the input so far.

Let me explain the history of what has happened and after that redefine what the problem is.

I had a train set that ran around my retail store. I had it running continuously when the store was open and this was very hard on the train and equipment. One of my employees father was an electrician. He said he could connect a timer to the transformer so the train would only run for a preset amount of time. He also connected a button to the timer so kids could come in and push the button to activate the train.

The setup worked flawless for about 15 years. Kids would come in and push the button. The train would run for 5 minutes then switch off. Next person would push the button and away the train went again for another 5 minute run. Recently it quit working. I took the timer box back to the electrician that originally configured it. Even though I had diagrams that he drew of how it was supposed to function he could not determine what was wrong.

I took the timer box to another electrician and he modified and it almost runs flawlessly now. The problem is when the button to activate the timer is pressed the transformer does not start in the correct mode. Sometimes just the forward light comes on and the train runs as intended. Most of the time though a direction button is illuminated and also the halt button. While the halt button gets activated the train does not move. However if you press the forward button the train runs perfectly fine for the preset amount of time.

Clues to the problem?? One of the big things that the second electrician did not have was wires connected to the input terminals on the back right of the transformer. Maybe this is causing the problem?

Explanation of images attached.

#1 is the overall picture of the timer box
#2 is how the wiring is attached to the timer control. The timer is an Eaton TMRP5100
#3 shows the back of the transformer. The two wires coming out of the bottom right of the transformer go nowhere now. The second electrician did not use them? Could this be the source of the problem???
#4 is a picture of the front of the transformer.

Just to reiterate my problem. When the button to activate the timer is depressed the transformer does not always get activated in the go forward mode.

Thanks for all of your help!!!
