As reported yesterday, Eighton Bahn Towers has taken delivery of a brand new Ge 4/4 loco.

Same as this one..

now I am looking to swap two of the sound function keys over, F6 (Off/on for parking loco.) and F8 (Sound off/on.) in order to bring her/him/whatever into line with my other sound fitted locos, F6 (Sound off/on.) but I am stumped as to which CV's to change, as the instructions do not list which CV's control which function, can anyone point me in the right direction.

All suggestions (reasonable or otherwise) would be welcome, but remember to type slowly cos I is thick. :P

Has this got a Marklin decoder or Massoth/LGB ?

<edit>
The only instructions I can find for 28434 seem to offer only a limited number of CVs so I assume relate to an LGB/Massoth decoder.

If it's a new production run with a Marklin decoder then pages 11 & 12 of the general decoder notes (below) seem to indicate there are 10 mapping CVs per function (5 for forwards and 5 for reverse), allowing you to map decoder outputs and/or sounds to each function. Of each group of 5, only 4 are used ( banks A-D) at present.

I've no experience at all of playing around with function mapping on a Marklin decoder. I'd definitely take a full CV backup (eg. through SPROG/JMRI) before fiddling!

The assumption is that it is Marklin, has Marklin sticker on the underside of loco Serial number is 11024976, says it on the box/instructions etc.

Not too keen at this stage to open up a brand new loco to find out what is inside. Maybe once the festive hostilities are over, then will have time for a strip down if necessary.

Should add they whilst the loco was produced in 2011, it is new, as in must have been in stock since then.

(ok, see my edited post above).

My gut feeling is 2011 is too early to have had a Marklin decoder in it?

I am going to assume here that since this was produced in 2011 it has an LGB/Massoth decoder.

As has been said before officially there is no way to remap the functions, unofficially it can sometimes be done.

Since Massoth seem to use the same code base for both their own decoders and those they make for LGB I have found that sometimes (but not always) it is possible to change CVs only advertised for Massoth's own decoders and find they have the same effect in LGB decoders.

Id suggest trying the following. If CV 147 (the sound on/off function) has 8 in it try changing that for 6.

Go through CVs 131 to 142. If you find one that has 6 in it, change it for 8.

It is a bit of a long shot but might just work. Sorry I haven't got one of these to try it on.

The best other option is to ask Massoth if they have any suggestions.

Cliff`s suggestion is very good. I have only found the CV description for the RhB Thusis locomotive (21272) which also was released in 2011. It has the standard LGB/Massoth large onboard decoder with a separate sound board. The description is in German. The information for sound CVs for that locomotive starts on page 3 and covers CV131 to 192, where CV147 is sound on/off with default value 8. In attachment 2 you can see the LGB large onboard decoder and also the smaller sound decoder.

Please also note that there has been an issue with one of the track wires missing from the large onboard decoder to the sound decoder for some of the LGB locomotives (27432 and the 28435). Without both track wires installed you will not be able to reprogram the sound decoder. For those of you reading German you can find the information here: http://modellbahnen.cadosch.org/jos/forum/4-gartenbahn/1693-ueberholung-der-lgb-28435

As a side note, I have chosen to use the standard LGB F8 for sound on/off, as I find it easier to remap the function keys for the Massoth decoders I use when upgrading analog or DCC ready locomotives to digital. I always leave the function key mapping for the original LGB digital locomotives unaltered.

Food for thought, and things to try out over the next few days, will report on progress or lack of.

Have also have thought of switching the massoth settings as well to match 28434 if all else fails.

Ok, now for the update..

Sat down this afternoon to read and record the CV's on paper, (No fancy computer gismos here, but I need to look into getting one.) quite a few have a 0 or 000 value and a couple of X ones for good measure, some of the higher 0 values also came with a speaker beep/squeak.

As pointed out CV 147 was 8 and I found CV 148 was 6, so I swapped the values and Bob is my dads brother. ;D

Thanks for the suggestions/advice folks.
