Leamington Greville Bahn- my return to garden railways

Hi all

Back a couple of years ago it became apparent that I'd be buying a house with a garden that led itself to having a garden railway built in the near future.

A mass buying of stock, track and buildings happened over those couple of years and in March i finally bought the house.

The Garden is around 45ft square so plans were put into place to start the railway.

The original idea was to use the Filchris system but this soon provided far too expensive so went with the same construction method of the one i'd built about 20 years ago at my parents.

Fast forward to June and there is about 30ft of track and foundations laid with more to come over time, photos of various points below.

Nice to be building, good start looking forwards to views of further progress.

Some more progress this week, although not as much as I’d hoped after my direct neighbours lean to went up in flames on the early hours of Monday.

Never the less, went over to Andy at Amazing Little Trains to purchase some R2 curves and 600mm straights.

Three more panels for the track bed went down over the last couple of days and I ran my Spreewald and a short rake of coaches on Tuesday night for a while.

Some plants added, Lots more of those to go!

Like you I wanted to use Filcris but the expense and the expansion problem (the garden is south facing and gets full sun) put me off in the end I went for a combination, if its in or very near the ground its filcris if its well above the ground and horizontal its wood either treated C16 timber or decking boards,I only want to do it once!

Same here, the garden gets the full sun for most of the day, treated timber for all I've done so far, tops, posts and framing have cost me less than 6m in Filcris would have done.

Treated Timber in earth will last a while but a friend had treated fence posts that barely lasted 2 years so not all are the same. A better and not so expensive option can be to use square drain down-pipe in the ground, filled with concrete these works very well. You can put concrete in as a dry mix, it will go off pretty quick if you just put a bit of water down the hole. Leave a gap at top about 2-3 inches for screw fixing cross members to attach surface boards to. The surface boards covered in roofing felt as you have done should last many years.

It's a good feeling when actual construction gets under way. I have one question, however. It has to do where the track passes in front of the step. The track seems to be a bit higher than the step. If so, won't it be a tripper ?

Looks like there could be a removable bridge section there, Dan.

No, he just needs to build the steps a little further out in the garden, and prolong the terrace over the railway so you have a rail tunnel under it.

Exactly that! Need to try to work that out fully once I'm in a position to pin the track down.
