jackson Sharp > Leek & Manifold coach bash

Just thought I`d show progress on my current project. Bashing three Bachmann Jackson Sharp coaches into something vaguely resembling the Leek & Manifold coaches.

The sides were increased in height and the balconies lengthened (a bit) and a pent roof was made from acrylic.

The toplights are sort-of leaded (must get some finer marker pens). At this stage, she still displays her origins but hopefully when I deepen the frames that will improve.

I`ve chickened out of making the scrolled railings and so dolls` house railings will have to suffice.

I know they are shorter than the beautifully elegant originals, but I`d never get scale length models around my right curves.

Rik

PS - Many thanks to Garry Martin for donating one of the coaches to the project.

The original colour for L&MVLR coaches was Primrose Yellow, after the North Staffs took over they become Madder Lake and when and LMS took them over they went to Crimson Lake. The locos followed suite, but were milk chocolate brown to start with.

Rik, those are a good passing likeness.

That look great. Just googled a fullsize picture and you have got thier character.

When I saw your thread title I thought "How on earth ...?" but, clearly, you are thinking outside the box Rik. A nice conversion - love the top windows - nice job!

Thanks Bob
And thanks too for your offline help with this

That's very kind of you chaps. I've had a couple of these coaches sitting in the drawer for several years thinking that one day they could be bashed into something a bit more UKish. I knew they would work on the tight curves on my railway because in the early days they were the only coaches I had - this pic was taken in 2008. Things have moved on a bit since then.....

I dabbled with the idea of Southwold Cleminsons, then measured up the Welshpool & Llanfair Pickerings. It was Henrik's request for drawings of the L&M coaches on here which prompted me to explore that option. The windows are more or less the right size, but the pillars between them are somewhat narrower - and of course those magnificent balconies are much longer on the originals.

Ah well Rik you must have seen the loco I showed last week.

Oh what the heck! Here it is again.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sorry, missed the thread - I remember a request for info about the headlamp but somehow missed the picture of the loco. What a beauty!! Now that I know would struggle around my track - unfortunately.

Rik
PS - Just out of interest, is it articulated in some way - otherwise the swing on the rear end must be massive with anything less than R3.

Very clever Rik, Instantly recognisable as a L&M coach , super work 8) The Southwold Cleminsons would have been my choice if I'd had anything like the skill to carry it off !

Rik, yes the swing must be horrendous, if you look closely, the last driver is half way down the chassis. The rear bogie truck has a slot to allow for the swing, but I haven't tried it yet, let alone around any curves. I have a minimum 4' radius and I think it should be fine, but I am a little concerned that the new Accu couplings may not swing far enough on the rear to pass through points etc. unhindered. Trials will commence when I have time to play (and it's warm/dry enough out). I have (half) a plan if it is a problem.

Thanks folks
Still a way to go yet. Thought I`d see what she looks like with deepened frames and balcony rails.

I`m not sure about the frames. They`re scale depth but look a bit chunky to me, maybe because my coach is under scale length. I might take them off and slim they down a bit. Roof not fixed on permanently yet which is why there`s a bit of daylight above the balcony.

Got to add supports for the roof, rivet details on the underframe. I might add some battening to the sides as well to make it look a bit more L&Mish. And then of course comes the interior. Already bought some warm white Christmas lights.... :)

Thought you Leek & Manifold devotees might like to see this one. Unfortunately there only seems to be one picture. What a beaut!!!

GRS do some railings that might be suitable. Otherwise try yatton engineering as he does kits for the coaches

Bob,
My minimum radius is 4` too, set by Peco G45 points and mine goes round fine. I use Accy chopper couplings but for the loco I`ve kept the original, turned it upside down and cut a slot to accept a chopper blade. By using the original pivot point inboard of the buffer beam there`s much less overhang.

I also find that the loco as supplied is rather tail heavy and the leading truck would sometimes fail to push through my sprung points. To solve this I first replaced the white metal dummy coal load with a piece of 1/16" aluminium with real coal glued on top, resulting in a saving of almost 200g. I next made a spring plunger for the front similar to the rear one and now have no problems.

All slot head screws around the motion have been replaced with hex heads and the wheel retaining screws with black finish socket screws in the Mossala Hill Railway house style.

Rob, I have already swapped the coupling for an Accy, but my thoughts were that if it didn't swing far enough, I would modify the R/H one. I too use Peco G45. Did you try a tougher spring on the rear bogie to even out the weight?
