I decided to do a trial on controlling steam engines on my 1:33 downhill on the horseshoes

first, RH Charles on modern 2.4, where you can adjust down the gain on the regulator on the remote, to get better slow running {as Phillip has seen}

second, RH Russell on the old "racing car" remote with the funny low-profile-tyred wheel regulator control, no adjustment on the remote, but the spindle on the engine for the actuator arm can be adjusted down, very hit and miss though, and reversing lever has to be deployed which makes downhill running a bit jittery

Very impressive, the 2.4 R/C. But I´m going to stick to manual (mostly ... :-\)

I watched looking through my fingers, but the descent seemed very controlled :o I must admit I wondered how the downward journeys went!
 
descents are not always that controlled
there were a few "takes" esp for the Russell vid

Well, except for the rack railway which is v. definitely going to have R/C, just as soon as the Rigi locomotive arrives from Regner ....

Not if glitching and batteries running out are that common as in live steam .... :-[ :-\ ::)
 
*Cough* That´s why I´m gradually getting rid of most of my R/C stuff .... :-\ I know that 2.4 is different .... but .... :-\
 
2.4Ghz R/C works a treat on my three steamies, and as I can't get alongside much of our railways is a must. Very true though that one must remember to have the R/C batteries charged.

Very interesting to see your experience with running on gradients. Also a very photogenic spot!

I have got extreme climbs on my layout and have tested them with a friend's little geared Regner Conrad (manual, no R/C). It did OK, strong up the slope and well-mannered down them... although it could only pull a couple of cars up the gradient.
I would like to use some live steam on the layout but I think that definitely geared locos only and 2.4ghz R/C would be the way to go ..but maybe not using the racing car throttle controller..... :o :o

I've not had a Regner on our Railway yet
 
I've asked Chuffed 2 Bits to sort out my Regner Vincent for me. If it is working as it should when I get it back I'll bring it with me next time we visit and we'll give it a go.
