Instaling a sight glass

While putting my Regner Lumberjack together I accidently broke the sight glass (the Oiler line had to much pressure pushing into the glass causing it to break ugh) I have a new sight glass on order but was wondering the best way to put a new one in? The Regner sight glass had no o rings, they used that white plumbers tape (I forget the real name). What is the best way to apply the tape and where? Thanks

P,T,F,E. is the name of the tape if its what i am thinking of, but have no idea how you would use it in the model.

poly tecno flouire efliden..
plastic tape for engineers
ptfe

you can use it on a thread.. start at the top,ie finsh ..work your way down, anticlock wise.tighning as u go till u get tothestart of the thread, overlapping the tread by 1/2 tape

or.. as agaskit.. u roll a strip of tape, and roll it in your fingeres to make a string of ptfe.. use it as a packing string

Simply wrap the tape around the glass after the nuts have been put on then slowly tighten them up, it may take two or three attempts to get the right amount. What will happen it will compress and form a seal, you should be able to get a reel of it from any DIY or plumbers merchant.

Just an observation.

There are two sorts of PTFE tape for water and gas, the gas version is thicker and comes in Yellow rolls as oposed to the White water version.

Shaun and Gord are both right. There are at least two thicknesses, either will do what you require.

My own method is to take a length and twist it into a sting and then wrap it round. This might be easier with the thinner tape as it wont bulk as much for your small glass. You will need at leats two turns spiralled around the glass before fitting the nut.

A bit fiddly, but quite do-able. Don't tighten the nuts any more than enough to stop any leakage, and make sure the two fittings are perfectly in line, so they don't strain the glass.

Take 60mm of the thin tape and twist it into a thread, wrap it around the glass, should be just over two complete turns. Wrap it in a right hand threaded direction so that the covering gland nut does not "undo" the thread as the nut nut itself is tightened. ( a small dab of thread sealant can also be applied if desired) Tighten the nut firmly, just over finger tight. I like to fill the bioler with water and pressurise it with compressed air to check for weeping seals. Very carefully tighten the glands until the leak stops. Do not over tighten as you will crack the glass.

Good luck.

I got the sight glass on. Only took a few tries to get it.
I finally was able to do my first test run on my Regner Lumberjack. Had a few minor issues, mainly loose connections. Once everything was tight, it ran well.
I did forget one thing. The pressure would drop as it was running. I then realised that the gas tank does not like the cooler weather and its not close enough to the boiler to keep it warm. It still ran but the fire was turned all the way up and even turned up it was not getting hot enough. Eventually I will have to come up with something to keep it warm or make it my warm weather runner. Cant wait to get some video.

Shawn, you might check what gas you are using, is it pure butane? Also check you loco instructions to see if you can use Butane/Propane mix. If you can, that should give better results in the cold.

Shawn the mix is fine, thats what I use in my Konrad. Hope you enjoy your loco. Funnily enough my one had to have the sight glass replaced as it was damaged in transit from Germany on its way to my supplier.
