Improving LGB US stock

An interesting thread Gavin, it makes good reading. I did not look at it before as it mentions specifically LGB, none of which I possess. Considering many factors I have been surprised how crude LGB trucks are - if the American outline ones I have seen at shows are a sample. I like the idea of changeable loads although my three flats (40ft. 'ers) are usually for logging use.

Thanks Alan!

You are quite right, the LGB standard gauge trucks are pretty dire to be honest. They are just way too big and chunky to look believable. Luckily though it is a really easy swap to change them over to an Aristo or USAT truck frame, needing only a little light trimming and filing underneath to allow for a wee bit more swing on some of our tighter curves.

The funny thing is that when you remove the original trucks, the body measurements of these LGB cars actually aren't too far off. These 53' flatcars are quite close! They are worth persevering with as once you get the car back to the bear bones, they make a really good starting point and saved me a lot of time! I wanted a relatively quick way to build up a fleet of realistic flatcars for lumber and building products, and using an already available body part helped me spend more time detailing and lettering these cars, rather than building them scratch.

It's just a real shame that someone like USAT don't make a really nicely detailed flatcar, I think it could really be a good seller, especially if it was slightly longer at around 50'.

Best wishes,
G

Hi Gav,
As ever your work is right up there with the best. Interesting that you are talking Operating Sessions, wished I was closer to Your neck of the woods. Would love to join in and have you and some of your gang Operate my line.

Re Stan the Decal Man, have need of such services.mis he contactable for others to use please.

Love the idea of Removable Flat Tops for Loads. Will make Load Fixings easy. I have done a similar idea but just plonk a new deck onto existing one. Crude but works OK.

Regarding decals, there are at least three or four good, weel known, decal producers in the USA. I have had decals from Jeff at Shawmut Cars Sops in Pennsylvania. They were ideal.
