Hurricane lamps

While browsing in a craft shop with my wife I noticed some tear drop shaped beads that looked just the right size for the glass chimney of a hurricane lamp.

So I’ve made a couple – one with the elec leads coming in from the base, for a lamp standing on a table, and one where the leads will be at the top for a hanging lamp.. Here’s the process I used.  Maybe not he greatest models, but the 8` rule should work for something less than 2cm high.
I ground the tops and bottom off the beads and drilled a hole in the base to take a LED.

Then I superglued some round tube on the top and bottom.  For the top lead version, I bent the LED leads out and up.

For the table type, the leads come out the bottom and 2 pieces of wire form the ‘handles’.
Here’s the final result with a warm white LED running at 2mA.

A set up a small diorama of a ganger sitting by his campfire, outside his tent  with the lamp on a tree stump.  (Someday, the man will be animated to drink from a cup and poke the fire,  but that`s in the future....)

Very nice Greg.... I take it the beads were not lead crystal.... Lots of useful stuff in bead/craft shops....

Very effective (especially lit up). Your camping scene reminds me of the song (Waltzing Matilda)!

Really neat, Greg. I could do with adding some lineside details like this - must finish the loco build first though

Excellent Greg!...the shape and construction also reminds me of the old flip stoppers found on bottles...now found on trndy beers and other things....

Thanks for the comments everyone.  I`ve made a 3rd one, using a yellow LED. I think I`m improving!

I`m surprised how many `non-Aussies` know Waltzing Matilda. Well done.  I was trying to model a swagman in that diorama.

;)

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong
Up got the swaggie and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Down came the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred
Up came the troopers One Two Three
Who's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
Who's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me.

Up got the swaggie and jumped into the billabong
You'll never catch me alive said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong

Yes! the yellow led does the trick, kero has a very similar flame colour....

Now if we could invent a Haka to go with it Gavin, we`d beat you at Rugby.

A final pic - this time of the `hanging` lamp on a small station.

I reckon the yellow led looks better than this warm white, too.

It's surprising what you learn at school and what sticks in your mind!

Don't downplay your first versions of the lamp. Yes the yellow suits the hurricane lantern but, equally the other Leds look fine. If you made a Tilley (pressurised) lamp then they had a more whiter flame than a wick lamp. I like all your versions and, as usual, they are a source of inspiration! I must look through SWMBO's box of odds & sods (or ask her nicely ;)).

We learnt it at school as well. We used to listen to a BBC schools radio programme which taught us all sorts of songs - I even remember the words to Toreador from Carmen - and a couple of Sea Shanties ...... eee them woz the days

Would adding a bigger resistor dim down the warm white LED a bit, Greg?

It's already only operating at only 3mA - white leds are really bright! Yes I can reduce the current more, but they are still whitish. The yellow one is operating at 20mA. I made a couple more today with a bit of yellow cellophane over the white led (I only had the one 3mm yellow led in my parts box). - will get some pics tonight.

I sourced a lot of 10 x 3mm flickering leds from eBay and used them in some lanterns and kero taillights (with red nail lacquer over) they do the job and they are a sort of candle coloured light. One problem with them though they stop flickering if you drop the current down to far... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50-x-3mm-Yellow-Candle-Light-Flicker-Ultra-Bright-Flickering-LED-Leds-/221414749058?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338d58f382&_uhb=1

Presumably, you can 'thicken' the paint layer to reduce light-output, but it will not 'yellow' the colour the way reducing the current does. - Different paint then!
