Hi can anyone help me please !!
I am trying to fit a Crest Revo to an LGB 2019S, the Colorado and Southern Mogul, does anyone have step by step instructions as the ones that come with it are very vague to say the least. Its for track power and to operate smoke lights, firebox and has sound.
Thank you

How far have you got Peter?
I presume you have got the beastie apart? can you identify the track and motor wires, or do you need help even at that level?

Hi PhilP, yes have it apart, such a massive pcb from LGB, i can see the track wires which look to be red, black and white, the motor wires seem to be green, brown and white, am i correct in saying that the white wires are common and go to the very center connection on the new pcb ?
PS thanks for replying

Jumping in to this (not trying to get in your way, Phil!) - if you've got a cable with green, brown and white wires only then it sounds like this is a loco with a pre-DCC 3-wire gearbox.... the normal LGB colour code is track: brown and white, motor: green and yellow - but locos built before the DCC era do not have the yellow motor wire, it is common with the white track feed. I'm not personally familiar with the Revo system, I know it's not the same as DCC but I assume that, like DCC, it does require the track power feeds and the motor connections to be completely separate in order to connect them to the Revo unit? If this is the case, you may find that you have to go into the gearbox, isolate the "white" pin from the motor tab and solder a new yellow wire to the motor - the same conversion that you'd have to do if you were DCC-chipping an old 3-wire gearbox.

I'm not 100% on this, but I suspect the black/red/white wires are NOT track power, but are actually the wires from a chuff sensor on one of the axles, which will be there to synch the sound board to the wheel rotation.

I agree with Jon.. This is not going to be as straight forward as it could be with a later model..
Peter, do you have a digital camera (or suitable mobile phone) to take a photo or two? - Just to be sure!

I have a large loco on the bench in (many!) pieces at the moment, else I would 'whip the top' off-of one here..
PhilP.

Hi guys, sorry only just found your messages. Hmmm, this is sounding far more complex than i thought, its for a nice set around my tree, had it manual as it were last year so fancied the Revo, also fancy expanding. Im seriously thinking about leaving this until after Christmas as i dont want to risk smoking anything then not having a train at all...lol. Whats your thoughts ??

Me thinks your right as not much chance of getting anything replaced. Would you mind if i come back to you after Christmas please PhilP and Jon

No problem at all Peter..
The Revo is a little 'obscure' to initially setup. - You have to set a number of things-up to get the handset and receiver connected to each other, and put a 'identity' into the thing for your loco.
If you have the version with sound, then sound will work from the outset.. You can control volume (in three stages) as well.
You might want to trawl through the Forum, and find the 'sticky' (well it was) article about converting an LGB 3-wire motor-block. - Not too difficult.

Happy to help where I can, Peter - Phil is much more technically experienced on this stuff that I am, but I have done several DCC installs on old 3-wire LGB locos (and on the even earlier "clamshell" type gearboxes too) so I'll give what advice I can offer.

I concur that if you want the train running for Christmas, it's probably best to leave the Revo install till the New Year and tackle it when you don't have a deadline to work to... ;)

I have done one with a lot of success. I took out all of the LGB circuit boards and started again. I also added cab lights modified and refitted flicker light in smoke box, forward and reverse lights swapped bulbs for LEDs. In the tender I fitted a speaker and used the Crest 20 volt battery. So where to start. First remove LGB circuit boards carefully I cut wires with a small tail so I can put back in if I needed to. If using battery power Remove bottom plate of motor block find brush parts and remove including wires. Find the two motor wires from the motor and connect to the revo adapter board connect two wires from battery to the track pick up connections via a switch and a 5amp fuse, this will give you a basic set up. Now you can add to this. Lights I swapped bulbs out for ultra bright yellow LEDs on the long leg of the Led I soldered a 100Ohm resistor then fitted them to the light housings the resistor wires connected to the Centre terminal HD com the other two terminals connected to the short legs on the LEDs Don't worry to much about which is front and rear as in REVO program u can sort. By now you will want sound. So in the bag there is a lead you will need to plug in to Revo board and solder other end of leads to a speaker. There lots of other little tips I can offer when you have these functions working. Programming loco is fairly easy I down loaded instructions from Crest Web site then went thru them page by page Hardest bit I found to get my Head around was Assigning a Cab no and why after that it was easy You can't wreck anything

Thanks Tinker, that's useful info! I think the problem that Peter will have is that his loco is an old LGB one with sound already fitted (hence the 4-digit model number with the "S" suffix) - so not only does he want to continue to use the LGB sound board that is already there (I assume), but he will also have the hassle that it's an old type 3-wire gearbox and will therefore need a similar modification to that used when DCC-chipping a similar model, in order to end up with the separated track and motor feeds that are needed for fitting the Revo unit. It sounds like you got round that by going to battery power.....?
Your experiences of programming and setup for the Revo will probably be very useful once the basic installation has been figured out!

Battery power and REVO allows me to take my loco for visits at other layouts also means I have to drive my engine which is a big part of the fun I reckon not run on auto as such

Peter,
I have recently done my 4th one of these, the latest for a friend. This was my first Sound one and I have to say that the drated thing gave me a Year or more of heartache due to the poor Instructions. Though to be fair instalation is easy and perhaps this link to the full manual will help:-

Where I got stalled was the Linking process which in reality I thought that you had to keep the button pressed on the reciever till the linking was completed. Wrong! Just press the button, once it flashes let go the do the menu link on the handset. Instant linking! Just shows how instructions can in some cases confuse even a hardened old nut like me.

Good luck with your project.
