Hello! Last year I decided that I need more time in the fresh air and bought a Piko Pennsylvania start set. I have not used it last year, but this year it is time to start a test track in the garden.
A small oval with some sidings should provide me with enough possibilities to gain experience. I think I will start a layout thread and hope for some friendly advice.

You are going about things the right way - get track down and running something and go from there.

Interesting that you are in Austria and opt for a US standard gauge line rather than Austrian narrow gauge. I suppose it's he grass being greener on the other side of he fence.
 
The grass is not greener but as Iive near Steyr where the Steyrtalbahn heritage railway still runs I can have the real thing and I see not fit to improve on that.;)

I have choosen Pennsy because I like the livery of the PRR Piko rolling stock. And as my funds and space both are limited I searched for small engines and rolling stock that looks good and runs good on radius 1. The American rolling stock runs on boogies, imho that is better on undulating track as the continental 4 wheeled rolling stock. And in the basement I have an 0 scale tinplate layout running small Austrian and Czech steam lokomotives.

More a case of why model what's on your doorstep I guess. It matters not!

Welcome Thomas. You have begun the best way IMO with a starter set; all you need and you know it will work without too many problems. But you are probably experienced in solving problems if you run tin plate O gauge!
