GSS Open day at beavercreek

Nice one Tony
It portrays the 'Chase' beautifully! Steve (bigjack) and Jon (Zerogee) cetainly put my newly hooked up Massoth through its paces!!

Looks like I missed a good day Mike, hopefully I can make the next open day. Great pics and videos.

Excellent stuff, Tony! Thanks for posting that.
The Kitson is actually running on two cut-down U class chassis that have been fitted with pivot mountings, not Mallet ones. Sound and DCC is a Massoth XLS (programmed for a German Mallet) in the bunker, with a big Visaton speaker under the "coal load".
Incidentally, we have no idea of the provenance of the Kitson model - I bought it (in analogue form) from Tony, who had in turn got it in an auction job lot (along with several other scratchbuilds in plasticard, but this was the only brass one, so most likely not by the same builder). It's beautifully built but quite obviously from scratch - it's all brass except for a steel pipe for the boiler, and the analogue wiring was quite odd, using the whole metal body of the loco as a common return! I stripped the power units off and insulated them from the body, rewiring it so I could chip it for DCC and sound; the only thing I haven't yet done is to reconnect the lights, which were originally run off a 4.5volt flat "bell" battery in the bunker.
If anyone has ANY idea at all as to who might have built it, or when, I'd love to know.....

Jon.

The problem that caused the couple of tail-end shunts during the "chase" sequence seemed to be a particular dead spot on the track just coming out of Beavercreek station - the Kitson stalled on it a couple of times (despite its long overall wheelbase and all-wheel pickups!), allowing Steve's triple-headed shorties to come storming up the rear (oo-er...). ;)

Jon.

Mmmmm Jon, the dead spot must have been an 'intermittent' one that the not insubstantial weight of the brass Kitson caused as the Forney and the the Amtrack Genesis didn't flinch ...but having said that perhaps it was only on the one exit from the particular loop that yours and Steve's locos were using. I will check it again with my Accucraft K27 as this weighs a ton as well!

Yep, I found a couple of hesitations with the Kitson, both at exactly the same spot, Mike - can't recall if the Rugen 0-8-0 had any trouble there or not. Actually, thinking back on it I'm not 100% sure whether it was a dead spot OR if the camera flat behind the Kitson got stuck on the point - but something caused it to hold back for the second or two that Bigjack's three shorties needed to close the gap!

Jon.

I do remeber that I had forgotten to change the point at some time so perhaps the flat derailed and cuaght up on the point. There are five sets of points in pretty quick succession in that area so that could be the problem. Anyhow I have got some time in the afternoon tomorrow so I will get out the shelf queen (K27 ) and test that area. A small section just before the decking step did shift the ballast and 'sink' a little during the open day....probably the weight of your Kitson!!

Fantastic night shots Mike those LED's really bring your line to life after dark
