GRASS Christmas party 2013

The Garden Railway Addicts of Sutherland Shire (GRASS) and the Ladies Auxiliary decided on a Christmas get-together on Friday the 13[sup]th[/sup] at Sandstone & Termite.
The first problem arose when we returned from a few days away to find a two large trees down across the baseboard at Ti-tree station.

So some quick work with saw was required to clear a path to get trains through.
Then Keith called to advise he was off the hospital to have his ring ‘wing’  repaired, but he and Pat made a later appearance and his left hand was able to handle a beverage.

The weather for the party was ‘just right’ around 30C, but humid enough to make you wonder if your deodorant was up to the task.

Three of us started early for a some serious train running.

But just as the ladies arrived with the ‘nibbles’ a loud ‘crack’ indicated that more of the tree had given away and landed on Ti-tree station. So it was all hands to the saws and pruners to get the track clear again.  A number of (little) people were injured in this accident but as this is the 1950s, no-one was ‘offered counseling’  and no TV crews descended from the skies to interview witnesses who would have described it a ‘just like a bomb’.
With the arrival of the food and beverages,  train operations reduced to a couple of trains chasing their tails around the yard.

With the nibbles consumed we repaired inside for the feast prepared by the ladies.
Then three of us braved the mozzies for a night run.  I had placed flickering LED ‘tea candles’ inside many buildings and carriages.

Ti-tree station is deserted.

The last train departs Melaleuca

And so it all came to an end, when the last train had departed Melaleuca.

Then it was time to pack up in the dark!!!!

And Merry Christmas to you. Looked like you all had a great time (apart from broken trees and limbs). Nice selection of pictures and a great video. Loved those nighttime scenes!

Thanks Mick. I'm enjoying experimenting with night time photography. For many of these pics I had a mate holding a torch to give a bit of highlighting. I think it works well.

Merry Christmas Greg. Look's like a good day was had by all - except the trees. Was it wind, or just normal gum tree behaviour?

Steve

Superb pics of a great day, you guys in the Southern Hemisphere can brighten up our lives just a bit as we endure another rubbish Winter. Once spent New Years Day on the Beach in NZ and have to say it looked like a great way of life. Now if only we could transport our Plots down your neck of the woods for our Winter and return here for our Summer. That would be life.
Have a great one Greg and all the Gang,

We had some 100kph winds in Sydney while we were away. But it was the 2nd day after we returned that I noticed the tree down. Shows how observant I am.

Thanks and have a great holiday season even if it is cold for you.
I've only ever spent 2 Christmases in the north. The cold certainly means you get more into the spirit of decorations and lights etc and I really enjoyed that part of it. But the cold was too much for me. I need to be outside.

Looks all far too sociable Greg, far to much enjoyment being had by all. Have a great Xmas.

Nothing like an Aussie Xmas is there?

Dont watch if you find Aussies enjoying themselves offensive

Thanks Gavin. I'm always impressed by your Kiwis' railways. I just realised it's 10 years since we last made it to NZ. Must get motivated again.
Don't forget if you or any of your mates are visiting Sydney, you're always welcome to drop in here.
