Hot on the heels of the sample copy of "Volldampf" that arrived on Saturday, this morning a sample copy of another German magazine, GARTENBAHN, dropped through my letterbox (figuratively speaking - actually we have to have all our mail and papers put in a box outside, because otherwise the Schnauzer puppies turn it into confetti in about 3.5 seconds!). Like Volldampf, Gartenbahn offers a free sample issue by request. Whereas my sample copy of Volldampf was the latest issue, Gartenbahn sent me a random back issue from last year - issue 2 out of 6 issues from 2010.

So, having just reviewed Volldampf, I thought it was only fair that I did a quick review of Gartenbahn as well.
First impressions: GB has a slightly higher page count than VD (oo-er, just realised that may not be the best way of abbreviating that one....), at 66 pages rather than 58, but is printed on slightly lighter stock and is stapled rather than perfect-bound, so it actually feels a thinner magazine though it has more pages. Physically, GB looks and feels very much like the UK's Garden Rail. Unlike VD (ok, I've done the joke so I'm just going to stick with it), GB seems to have - at least going by the sample issue I received - more Live Steam content - not perhaps to the same extent that our GR has, but GB is certainly more of a balance between live steam and electric. GB also covers some Gauge 1, plus Gn15 and such, so has a broader base of articles than the exclusively G-45 approach of VD.
As with my last review, I must state that I'm going very much on appearance and the photos here, because my knowledge of German is limited. GB is full colour throughout, and the photo quality is excellent. As to articles, the issue I received has a prototype piece on the Ohsabahn in Sweden, an article on HSB railcars (model and prototype), a gorgeous Vivarais Mallet scratchbuilt in brass on LGB running gear, a Gn15 estate railway line, several assorted how-to articles, a live-steam Philadelphia 0-4-2T build, Marklin gauge-1 tank car conversions, a piece on the Piko V60 (not sure if it's a review or an article on modifying it - will have to try to figure out some of the text!!), various reviews and plenty more besides. An eclectic mix of articles, all well presented and illustrated.
Overall opinions? Well, GB is another very good magazine, and certainly recommended; if I had to choose one or the other to subscribe to, I think I'd plump for Volldampf, but I must stress that is ONLY because it is almost entirely dedicated to the specific stuff I'm interested in - ie: G scale, Euro railways and track power. If your interests include live steam, gauge 1 and so on, then you might well find that Gartenbahn offers more for you. Check it out at:

Hi Zerogee,
If you like Gartenbahn, have you ever seen a copy of the other German magazine Gartenbahn Profi? This is a quite superb magazine with excellent articles and the photography is absolutely first class. They mainly concentrate on traditional track powered G scale with LGB/Aristocraft etc. Like Gartenbahn it is published six times a year with an occasional special edition of 'Dream Layouts' Similar to the Railway Modeller magazine, each edition features a 'layout of the month' which is usually quite large and has copious amounts of excvellent photographs. I have about twenty or so copies and had a regular order with a UK supplier but sadly they have just informed me that they are no longer importing the magazine. If you would like a loan of a couple of issues to review, send me a PM with your address and I will pop them in the post.
Regards,
Submariner

Another vote for GB Profi here.

I've read both GB and GB Profi and the quality of the content is good, although inevitably with some LGB bias.

I subscribed to GB Profi for a couple of years and found it by far the best magazine of all for detailed tests based on hard facts e.g. a table of standard wheelset measurements compared with actual compliance by different manufacturers or loco Zugkraft measured in kilos (=Pulling power).

But that last point reminds me that the German is quite demanding. Some of the articles in early issues used to be available in English online translated by HJ in Canada.

Sadly I had to chose to stop my sub but I do miss it and regularly re-read my collection. They have a back issue index available online.

Mike

Thanks for the offer, Sub - as it happens, the free sample copy of GBProfi I'd requested from them dropped through the letterbox this morning! I'll have a good look through it when I stop for lunch, but on a first quick flick it does look very good!

Oh dear, having just splurged* on a load of back issues of Volldampf, I can feel the need for some GBP ones as well.....

Jon.

* It's OK, I wiped it up afterwards.....

I got my copy of Gartenbahn too - less impressed than with Volldampf for content - I do prefer the European (and LGB) apparent focus of the latter... however a nicely produced magazine with a good set of modelling articles. It appears I have the same issue as you Jon too...

I had a look for GBProfi but couldn't find a link for a free sample?

GB must have an extra box of that issue left over that they're using for the freebies! ;)

Oddly, I now can't find the free sample request on GBProfi's site either.... I know it's there somewhere, because I asked for one and I've just got it, so I know it works!
I'll keep looking, if I find it again I'll let you know where it is.

Jon.

Edit: still can't find it, despite going through the Google translation; anyone out there who speaks German well enough to tell me (and James) where it is?

Try http://www.gartenbahnprofi.de/Gartenbahn-Profi-Abonnement/Probeheft-bestellen/1,000000215709,8,1 < Link To here. Despite earlier comments, I wouldn't describe GBP as having an LGB bias - if anything, the very extensive coverage given to the Piko new releases, accompanied by prototype articles, articles on installing digital control and detailing upgrades, etc, and then the articles devoted to TrainLine's new coaches and their development, would almost suggest the opposite. That may reflect the lack of genuinely new models from the LGB stable of late, of course. If anything, there is a slight bias in favour of Euro G, which probably reflects the readership, but that said the latest issue has a long article about a US based model, as well as an in depth review of an AMS model. Gartenbahn is cheaper, has fewer pages, uses lower quality paper and perhaps has less in depth analysis - but it also has a slightly wider view of the hobby, including a little more on prototype railways and more on live steam. Gartenbahn Profi has some real in depth analysis of, for example (in recent issues) decoders, platform lights and, in this issue, coach lighting; the sort of analysis that you never, ever see in Garden Rail which is incredibly amateur by comparison to both these magazines.

Hah! Thanks, yes, that's where I found it originally! Wonder why I couldn't find it this time round?
Much appreciated - there you go, James, you should be able to get a sample copy now - in my case I didn't get any kind of email acknowledgment, so wasn't sure if my application had gone through, but then the sample turned up today in the post - so it seems to work even if you don't get any confirmation.

Jon.

I ordered a sample not long after James ordered his and mine arrived today - issue 3/2011 May/June.

Intersting article on how to make Fascinating scenes with movement.

Just need to learn German to appreciate it.

Further on the subject of Gartenbahn Profi, I picked up a big box of back issues from Peter (Submariner) at Reading on Saturday - over 30 issues, plus the two "specials", which are wonderful - pure "Garden Railway Porn"! ;)
I've been steadily working through them for the last few days, getting very inspired when I should have been doing other things...
Glad you're liking your sample issue, Mike - if you think about ordering anything from them, the two special issues (Traum-Anlagen 1 and 2) are very well worth it.

Didn't we all learn German as kids, from reading things like Victor comics? You know, "Achtung, Raus, Raus! and "Hande Hoch, Britischer Schweinhund". Oddly enough, that didn't come in very handy when I actually started German lessons at school.....
Mind you, it was better than Victor Comics' Japanese, which consisted solely of "Aiiiieeeee, Banzaiiiiii!"

My Gartenbahn Profi turned up whilst I was away.... Only quickly flicked through but first impression is very good. Think it's the best of the three on my opinion. Will take a proper gander later over a coffee and slice of cake!
