Hi guys,

I haven't had a chance to take much photos due to weather, so I just wanted to share a few pics of some stock running at the last G Scale Society Scotland meeting I was able to attend about a month ago. Our portable layout recently recently got hold of a Massoth wireless navigator so I was able to use some of our DCC equipped stuff I had brought with me.

Here is a brief picture of a loco I'm currently working on, it's a USAT GP7 painted up in Southern Railway colours, which was a present for my father's 60th birthday from the family.

I managed to convert it over to DCC with an NCE 808 chip and Phoenix P5 board, plus fit some kadees, all in time for his birthday celebration, so he was thrilled when he opened it up and it was all ready to go! Sadly I didn't get time to complete all the painting and detailing work, but I'll post up the photos as soon as she's ready.

Thanks for looking,
All the best,
Gavin

Hi Gavin,

Nice photos, thanks for posting: - just a thought - I think the Southern RR ran their locos with the long end first; that certainly applied later(with SD45's) , not quite certain re these earlier ones.

Yours Peter.

Thanks Richie, please le me know how you get on, I'd love to see the results! Drop me a message if you get time.

The best way to go is direct as the first is a small family run company based out in California. Their website address is http://www.bragdonent.com/ and you can get the whole range of colours. You can buy rubbing alcohol (70%) in various sizes from a chemical firm called Mistral http://www.mistral.ie/ as it seems to be almost impossible to buy over the counter any more. As for the varnish, sadly due to export/import laws regarding dangerous substances, areosols etc, its getting really hard to find Dullcote in this country, though I'm sure a really good quality varnish from the likes of Tamiya and others would be just as adaquate. Just make sure you test it out on something before you spray your new masterpiece! Oh yeah, and I remember... it sounds stupid, but don't spray in the cold. I made that mistake spraying in a freezing cold garden shed and the varnish seemed to split leaving a nasty great mess over what was one of my nicest cars so far!

All the best,
Gavin

Peter,

thanks for the nice comments, the Southern like neighbouring Norfolk & Western did run long hood forward in an attempt to provide the driver with some protection in the event of a grade (level) crossing accident. However it does seem that this did not apply to all their locos, as my father's reference book shows almost all of the GP7s and 9s painted up for short hood forward. It was a learning curve for me as my father being a Southern geek would've spotted it from a mile away! I was just fitting new horns, firecracker anntena and speedometer cables last night so some progress is being made, albeit very slowly

Thanks again, and all the best,
Gavin

Hi Gavin,

DULLCOTE is now available from EDM models (http://www.ngtrains.co.uk/ < Link To www.ngtrains.co.uk) - look under the Misc. headong on the right hand side - I have just ordered some it is £16.25 incl. post for 3 cans (min amount you can order), the solvent it had is why you could not buy it here - the EU didn't approve of it, now it has a new one: only from EDM though. No connection with them by the way.

If ordered it won't be on its way till Monday - his is at a model show all weekend.

Yours Peter.

Another option to consider as a possible alternative to Dullcote is aerosol varnishes sold in art shops for spraying over art work. The one I've got gives a nice fine gentle spray and it come in a big can that lasts for ages. No doubt there would be a variance on what you have "over there" compared to here (NZ) but it might be worth a look. :)
