I'm New, Please Be Gentle
Here's the first couple of pictures of our new build locomotive. I drew this up and sent it to Rongotai Aircraft Co. for cutting from a mix of 2 & 3 mm material. Designed to fit on an HLW motor block the locomotive is based loosely on a Commonwealth Engineering locomotive that used to run at Fairymead Mill in Australia.

For locals in NZ wanting some cutting done for models I can recommend the foamers at the Rongotai Aircraft Co.

Looks interesting. Will watch for progress reports. So how detailed did you get with your drawings ? Did you make them the old fashion way with paper and pencil or the new fangled method of CAD ? Would like to know more about the engineering and thought process that brought you to this point.

I did the drawings in 2D CAD and made them reasonably detailed. Some samples from the CAD file are below it's designed to have tabs to locate all the components. I made all the components as blocks so I could sort of move them around and see if the locomotive looked OK. As this is my first attempt at a laser cut model this detailed so this thread could end up being how not to do a laser cut model. The mine skip chassis in the bottom photo was my first attempt a laser cutting a model and uses a Ferrero Rocher chocolate box as the hopper.

And for completeness, here is Ben holding the Skip Chassis after its assembly......

I think I prefer your mine-tub!

Is the finish on the chassis as it comes off the cutter?

Fantastic.
Are you going to make them commercially? You should.
Same with the dismal.

Tony,
The plan is to finalise the drawings an do a few production runs to help pay for our railway. I'm only designing stuff that the kids and I want to run so if we don't sell any there is no great loss.

The parts for the diesel arrived today so we've done a test fit to identify any errors in the design. So far from the test fit there are some minor errors but nothing that'll stop this prototype going together.

Yes, the skip chassis was how it comes straight off the laser......obviously with some assembly required!

With the correct settings on the laser (and enough watts!) you can be left with a really smooth edge on acrylic.

Looks great so far. I have threatened myself, several times to try something in 7/8ths scale. But each time I think off the time and money I have put into G scale.....:wondering:

You could run a mixed scale railway if your loading gauge is large enough. This engine is going to test the loading gauge on a number of the local garden railways. With the flashing light it will be about 20mm higher than our guards van.

It WILL fit the Taita Gorge Railway, Western Division That's he bit that people mostly see.

Not to be confused with the instruction, in invisible ink, that the owner of visiting stock reserves the left to attack substandard clearances with same Chinese 12 lb Mallet.

This is turning into a cracking thread......

We are after all, dealing with someone, a member of our own ranks, no less, that single handedly paralysed the Capital's rail system at 4.30pm on a Friday evening with a 'what does this switch do' action (not the exact circumstances, but the true story is legend in rail circles, and straight bits).

One shouldn't laugh.. No, really!
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

So,
On the grounds it would probably be cheaper to fly over there, and bring a kit back in hand luggage...
Could a donation be made to 'the fund' and the file(s) find their way to the man who cut my derelict house?
