I thought I was the only G scale modeller in our area, but I was wrong. Yesterday we had our first visitors, Peter and his dad Ron (a retired local engine driver, no less!). Peter has been 3d printing quite a bit of rolling stock in NZ120 scale, which you can admire on his web site. In the last 9 months he has also printed quite an impressive range of 1:24 locos and wagons and he brought them and a controller along to test them. Here they are:

Since I don't normally have track power we expected problems and had plenty. Still, we ended up with about 10m of usable track. Powered by an Aristo Critter chassis this shunter ran quite well:

The big steamer with its 3d printed drivers only picks up power from two wheels on the tender, so it was a little less successful, but ran nicely when it did. Even the gears and valve gear are printed:

This tank engine uses a Bachmann chassis, so it had better power pickup and ran quite well.

We had an enjoyable afternoon testing trains in the sun.

Some very nice stuff on show!

Very nice locos I'm very impressed I would love to catch up with Peter and exchange notes I have a very similar loco to the one shown in your pictures its a South Australian Railways 800 class here is an early picture during construction/

The interior I am using RCS reciever and TX and a mylocosound card with the speaker I have it sounds great

I wonder if your driver friend Peter has thought about converting his big steamer (Ja?) to Battery Operation? Think that would easily solve his Pickup Problems. He certainly has the measure of 3d Printing well sorted out.

Alan, that is a nice looking loco. What motor blocks are you using? And what is that track system using flat alu?

Jon, he is thinking about it now, but he already has a 10A NCE DCC system. I remember seeing a wireless DCC somewhere, where all you have to do is attach a small TX to the track output of a command station, add their wireless Rx to the loco and you have the choice of running it off battery or track power. That may be the way to go for him, esp. since he wants to automate things.

Thanks Peter
The mechanisms I make myself they are 3D printed shells and i usually use motors and gears from IP engineering.Assembly4.jpg
They are fairly simple to make and its easy to make them exactly to the scale and size you want which is what prompted me to go down this road.
